Were we talking about music and related or their personal issues? Ozzy isn't captain innocent either. Personally I don't care if he hangs upside down in the closet jerking off reading gun's and ammo, his music is great. If I had problems with personal issues I wouldn't like John Lennon either but he's still considered great right?
9. Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne Dating since their teens, Sharon became Ozzy’s manager and bride, though according to her they used to "beat the ----- out of each other.” Ozzy knocked out her teeth, she smashed a bottle on his head and in a drunken, drug-induced haze, he tried to strangle her. After a bout in rehab, the couple gained stability, and eventually a successful reality series with their family. She founded Ozzfest and revived his career yet again. From Entertainment Magazine Looks like they were both screwy eh?
To gain popularity? I thought they were doing something quite new and unpopular at that time: taking heavy blues rock to further and darker directions in a distinctive style and pretty much opposing the poplular flower power trend at the time.. It also seemed Ozzy was pretty messed up that time and not as carefully busy with image and show like we are used to of him nowadays. They were just doing their own rock thing and because they did it their way (more Iommi's way than Butlers as I understood) it became something new, deep and groovy at the same time and also highly influential. Yeah, Ozzy's solo career is pretty different unfortunately...
John Lennon was an asshole, but at least he faught for social causes. But people have this "oohhhh, Jim Morrison *swoons*" view on Morrison which is so far from the truth. Morrison was an asshole to begin with, then he stopped doing acid and became a raging alcoholic, and well we all know how assholes get when they're drunk. Ozzy on the otherhand, no one swoons and gets all dreamy when they think of Ozzy, they think of psycho frontman who now screams SHAROOOOOON Also to say Jim never cared about image or money is hilarious to the 3rd degree, this is what I mean about people being like JIM MORRISON ZOMGS!!!!
Haha yeah, I think in their early days Morrison was at least as conscious of creating an image as Ozzy.
I have to agree with a lot of the other posters on here that comparing Ozzy Osbourne and Jim Morrison isn't really feasible since they are from two totally different music stylings/backgrounds. But since the question was thrown out there, I'm voting for Morrison...no contest. I've never been a huge Ozzy or Black Sabbath fan, there music has never really hooked me; hell, I think I only have one Ozzy album in my music collection and it's more than enough for me. Morrison (well, the Doors) had me hooked since I first heard their music. Since then, I've collected as much of their music as I could find, read books and bios, and read some of Morrison's published poetry. Morrison and his music are WAY more intriguing to me than Ozzy has ever been. As an artist and a person, Morrison is much cooler and much more talented. Oh, and I also agree that Ozzy's completely tarnished his image with that ridiculous reality show and the commercials. Seriously, I find it hard to view him as the "Prince of Darkness" after watching him clambering through his dog-filled home mumbling about mundane bullshit and the recent World of Warcraft commercial pretty much sealed the deal. Poor guy...
Well, I think another reason why this comparison is hard to make is because we 'judge' Ozzy on his whole career while Morrison died in his heydays. If Ozzy died after Blizzard of Ozz or Sabotage people would look upon him fairly different I'm sure, since he didn't sold out yet then. Hard to say how Jim would have managed if he would have lived so long of course.
Maybe Ozzy should beat his wife and write a check to Green Peace. And Butler DID design the band after seeing how popular horror movies were. read up on it, its common knowledge. A short read on Wikipidia will do the trick
How did it not shape their music? He saw the popularity of horror and gore flicks and wrote music along those lines. It's like seeing love stories do well and writing love music. It's a no brainer. I mean really Did Ozzy just come up with the prince of darkness in his sleep? Lets be real, it was a great idea.
It did shape their music, but not nearly all their songs are horror-inspired. The style of their riffs and overal compositions did shape their music even more. So if we're talking about persons Iommi ment more for the typical image of Sabbath as Butler, even if it was Butler who came up with the idea of making a dark sound inspired on horrormovies and the bandname. Just my perception.
I agree. The dark sound just kind of stuck with them, almost making people expect it on their albums to the point they had to include some. Ozzy OTOH didnt really care, and did what he pleased, although I think he dug being the prince of darkness....lol, JM OTOH had the image of an off the wall stoner that didnt give 2 craps and that did appeal to some, heck many.
Jim Morrison is one of the best lead singers ever. He influenced guys like Mick Jagger and he influenced everyone else to come after him. Both Ozzy and Jim were crazy, but in my opinion Jim is the better between the two.
