two computers, one linksys router, one cable modem. we both got the internet. but we can't see eachother.

already ran the "network setup wizard" told it each computer connected to the internet through a router. ("other" then the first option)

all firewalls are turned off, ZA and the windows one. we each have folders that have been "shared"

and I enabled netbios over tcp/ip or whatever that thing was.

so why can't we see one another?

can you ping each other? also, can you see eachother with the computers just connected to each other and not going through the router?

I assume you're on XP if you have the Windows firewall, have you set up access permissions for each of the machines as well?

we used to be able to see eachotehr, and share some stuff. then his box died, i whipped out the fdisk and went to work on that, and now he's got a fresh copy of winders xp, (my same corporate copy)

and we can't get to one another.

windows firewall is turned off on both boxes.

Make sure you both have DHCP enabled in your network adapters...

Can you both ping the router?

    yep, DHCP enable on both.

both can get to the router.

his box can't sign onto aim. mine can. which is odd.
    as he does have internet.

now, under network places > workgroup computers, i can see my puter and his. but when i click on his, it spins the hourglass for a while, and then says it can't find the network path, or i don't have permission.

Can his computer get to yours, even though yours cant get to his?

    Find out your IP address...

Go to Start, RUN, CMD (or COMMAND if its win9x)

try to ping eachother to make sure its not a switching/routing issue

You may have to create a username/password that matches on each machine to connect depending on your configuration

ok, from his computer pinging me (ping 192.168.1.100) he gets "Ping transmit failed, error code 65"

me pinging him (ping 192.168.1.101) "Request Timed out"

completly uninstalled ZA, figured it couldn't hurt.

network works now, we can see one another, he can get to AIM.

not sure why that fixed it.

must have been a ZA thing, make sure youve got some sort of firewall running if you are concerned about shit...your router NATing will take care of most of the bozo's out on the net though.

I tried turning on the windows firewall, but then he couldn't get to my stuff anymore.

so yeah, not firewalled except for the router one right now.
