who agrees? Christmas is Christs birthday, but atheists seem to think they can just celebrate it to get presents. This is pretty much offensive to me, and I dont know why this hasn't been discussed before. maybe im over reacting but I just find it very annoying how people celebrate a holiday they don't even believe in.
Its a pretty ridiculous holiday, and it really shouldn't have much religious significance to anyone. Just a celebration of the solstice.
So all the christans are allowed to mock christ's non-actual birthday with elves and wiis and a giant fat man in a fuzzy red suit that takes advantage of child labor? praise jesus, we are a saved enlightened group!
We celebrate Christmas as a Birthday, because most Christians believe that These is some of Christ in all of us, we just need to find it.
Sounds good to me but there's one problem, Dec 25 272 First official public celebration of Dies Natalis Invicti Solis, a pagan Roman holiday that was later co-opted by Christians to celebrate the birth of their favorite Jew. Turning the holiday into "Christmas" (in 336 AD) was part of a pattern of the church stealing various pagan festivals and feast days. Jesus Christ was not the son of a god and if he was indeed a real person in history at some time (doubtful) probably wasn't born on December 25. By celebrating christ-mas you further cement the fact that you are believing an illusion and have been fooled by a fake bible. So do YOU really believe in the ludicrous stories of an eccentric preacher who was made into a human sacrifice? And if so what the fuck does it have to do with the pitiful religion of Christianity, Santa, Reindeer ect ect ect. In my opinion most so called "Christians" worship J.C Penny's, Wal-mart and various other companies much more than they worship a dead preacher on that ridicules day.
Christmas is being overtaken by commercialism. Religion stands no chance other than for the sake of generating profit from the beliefs of others. Do not say yes or no to Christmas. Just surf around it to your liking when it comes by. I'm not Christian, yet I get alot of enjoyment in the sharing of it with others. Their joy is my joy. If I'm a visitor in a Jewish home, I'll watch their celebrations too. It doesn't matter Only people matter. If they're smiling, that's all that matters. x
How do they "mock" it exactly? By enjoying time with their family? By giving gifts to others? Example: someone is ethnically Jewish, but not practicing. Lets go as far to say that they are uncircumcised. Is it mocking to Orthodox Jews if he celebrates Chanukah...you know, as a cultural expression? Euro-North America is mainly culturally Christian, therefore it is arguable that it isn't mocking but merely an expression of an entrenched culture.
A hippie who preached peace, love and understanding--especially for the outcasts and rejects of society? You may think that's ludicrous, but I think it's worth celebrating. Nothing false about it; the truths are self-evident. If you put them to use in your life, they work miracles. On the other hand, if you put your ideas to work, they make folks into bitter, sour cranks nobody takes seriously. And you're calling Him eccentric? You're right on that score, but real Christians can enjoy the holiday anyhow. As for non-Christians celebrating Christmas, I don't find that offensive if they do it respectfully. Christmas can be meaningfully celebrated as a secular holiday when families and/or friends can enjoy getting together. The togetherness, not the presents, is the spiritually important part, and as far as I'm concerned, an appropriate celebration of Christ's birth, intentional or not. What really offends me are the battles over celebrating Christmes--should it be "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays", etc. And that's a conflict stirred up by pseudo-Christians--to commemorate the Prince of Peace!
Jesus Christ said he was the son of a god and that his mother was a virgin. That equals eccentric in my mind. Can you elaborate on what you think my "ideas" are and how they supposedly turn people into bitter human beings? There are no ghosts.
i agree and i do not celebrate christmas at all in fact i resent that every goddamn thing is closed it is the most tedious day of the year
rudie i hate to keep beating a dead horse [but what else is a dead horse good for?] you are contradicting yourself in your posts and sig WHICH IS IT?
More accurately, his followers said those things. They seem to be angry, largely negative, and dogmatic. And lately, on the Ethics topic, sociopathic. Probably.
there are no ghosts nothing is true so, there are ghosts i personally prefer a world in which there are both no ghosts and ghosts [everything is permitted]
Its called figurative speech, its not to be taken literally. The signature I use is stating that NOTHING is true. That would mean that yes, the statement in itself is not true which is exactly what the point of it is. Would you understand it better if I typed it this way for you? "Nothing is true, everything is permitted" <---- Including this statement. Its just a little play on words and terminology I'm sorry I should have spelled it out for you the first time you asked about it.
but if you believe all of that, and i do is it not difficult to say 'there are no ghosts'? i find it impossible [unless of course i am actually doing it] EDIT to add that i actually don't believe any of it except for the no ghost part [although i plan to become one]
