aww you sound sweet kman <3 what you could do is push a bead over two dreads that you'd like to mush together or make a hair wrap around two. This will encouage them to grow together :) x

I tied mine together with some cotton string. It worked far better when they were young, now they are older I'm having difficulty getting new ones to...mate together...

I started trying to explain this without pic's but it didn't really work so I took some pics.

I think this is called chinamans staircase, I found it on the web ages ago but I remember finding instructions on this shit hard to come by hench the little tut. I used cross-stich silks which are cheap-as-you-like if you go to the market as opposed to the hobby store and you can get loads of colours.

Step 1 - Cut a length of thread, the longest you can comfortably work with is just shorter than the span of your arms, then tie a loop round your dread, you probably want to double knot it.

Step 2 - Now you need to decide if you want to loop behind or infront of your dread, which will probably depend on if you are working in a mirror or not. Either way make a loop like in the pic.

Step 3 - Take your thread round the other side and pass it through the loop, then pull it tight. You have to take care in your pulling to butt it up to the previous one otherwise it will just pull tight where it feels and you'll have gaps. Repeat steps 2 / 3

This is it finished and done in "silk" you can see the staircase effect.

    Some notes

1 - You can reverse the side of your loop and reverse the direction of your spiral, just dont get confused

2 - When you get low on thread you can just tie some more onto the end.

3- The spiralness is dependant on the thickness of your thread and the thickness of your dread, in practice I tended to get a spine down one side.

4- These wraps are fucking indestructible and you will probably have to cut them out.

Working as described I could do about 1 linear inch / min in my hair.

thnks for the tutorial... totally not what I had in mind. I was going to use some of my own hairs to do that kind of bind, and then do some string that I would later remove. I can't put anything in my hair that would need cut out.

hey, ive got i think close to 70 dreads, really wanna combine em and drop it back to maybe 40-50. I've tried reading the above method over and over and i really dont get it from the diagrams :S

My dreads are prob 1.5yrs old so pretty locked up, is this the only method I can uses for my dreads now that they are so mature? Can someone explain this a little differently or perhaps another method? Ive had a couple of metal beads covering two dreads for a couple of months and, slowly pushed them up the dread, just took them off to see how it was going and they really havent locked well at all. The roots are formed great because i looped them together and stuff, but the rest of it isnt really locked at all. I need some ideas :|

    cheers..

I haven't heard of a way to get two mature dreads to meld together other than congos at the roots. Forked dreads are rad

That's how understood it, I think he wants the whole dread joined together. I don't get why people don't just let it grow and congo, problem solved.

ya there's no way for you 'mature' dreads to join all the way down the length. at only 1.5 yrs you can probably comb em out and try again.

There are many ways, ranging from "If they join, they join; if not, fine" to binding 2 dreads together (using hemp string, other string, yarn, cotton fabric cut narrow, silk cord, plastic bands, etc.; whatever suits your fancy).

I have had success with wrapping 2 dreads together - they will tend to join at or near the root, then join in their middles, but the ends remain separate (which is fine with me).

If the 2 you want to join are comfortably located near each other without having to pull them, you might be able to find a spot on one dread that is "loose" (not yet tightly dreaded) and "weave" the other dread into that loose spot. By weave, I mean just pull the one dread through the other. Work them together a bit - or wrap them - and eventually they will lock together.

It's all about patience, of course.

have seen people twist them round each other and sew them together, or braid three together- palmroll them together and wrap them,or crotchet them..
But like sisterags and others pretty much said, the mature ones probably don't often join all the way to the bottom, even sewn together.

Thread one through the roots of the other. Easiest way.
