    natural...
the thought of any hair uncombed/brushed
    equals
    dreadlocks (or a monodread)

    natural had me thinking.
since society is more about combed/brushed hair, right?

picture... if society was the oppisite
    (about hair)
    and dreadlocks was mainly dominant
and combed/brushed hair was looked down on

Would you all be the group with combed/brushed hair?

a lot of people decided to get dreadlocks to be different
I know my first reason for getting dreadlocks was to be free of the usual haircuts my parents encouraged.

    It's a dumb thought...

    but think about it

    in my city
of course, most people do not have dreadlocks
    maybe 5 in 1000
    maybe 1 in 5000
    cant telll

    but the opposite...
    hundred thousands with dreadlocks
and a hand full of people with brushed hair

    just a thought.

i was thinking about this the other day. when cave men were around dreads just sort of had to be. So someone eventually had to comb their hair, and probably did it to be different or whatnot.

i don't actually have facts for this or anything, but it seems to make sense.

i've tried a handful of hairstyles (mullet, mohawk, buzzcut/normal stuff, long brushed hair, and now dreads), so i guess i would've tried it anyways. i just have fun trying different things, and so far dreads are my favorite cause of the dedication to the hair. mohawk, mullet, short hair all had instant gratification. long brushed hair was cool and took dedication, but it was nonetheless boring. dreads are less boring and reminds me of the process of watching a plant grow, but rather on my head.

i try to ignore society but i guess thats impossible. i think if everyone had dreads i'd be less inclined to do them, but to challenge society's views on dreads (even though i get positive reviews, but thats just cause i'm young and in a liberal arts school) its fun to try to keep people at check on their prejudices. i hope i'd have dreads anyways cause of the fun i've had from the experience thus far regardless of society's view, yet maybe if dreads were the norm and the norm was what was looked down upon, i wouldn't be surprised if i were to try the norm if it was what is looked down on if it weren't the norm, if that makes sense.

so in short, yeah, challenging society is fun but personal satisfaction is key, and if your view of personal satisfaction is challenging society, all the power to you.

maybe its similiar to the theory that blond hair evolved to stand out from the brunettes and to attract a mate.. so maybe the combed hair look was born from everyone being dreadies in order to get a mate..

being non conformist for the sake of non conformity would be conforming in and of itself right, defeating the purpose of making a change. to stand out from society for the sake of it would probably just create more problems than it solves.

i used to like to explore breaking the norms of physical appearance, that's actually how i found my first set of locks. now i just do it because its what my hair wants to do and it lets me keep my hair super healthy. i used to dress to stand out, now i dress in whatever is practical, whether or not it stands out.

so my answer to the question would be i would keep my locks. that is if i had the knowledge that i had now. if keeping locks was harmful in this alternate universe and brushed hair was healthy, i would go with the brushed hair.

I don't want dreads to be different. I just love the look of long natural locks.

    It looks so HUMAN.

I feel that you should just let your hair grow and form and see what happens.

    It's REAL.

btw, i saw u took my pictures of me and put them on some website called InsideHoop.
not a real fan of that.
i found out cuz i was google image searching natural dreads and i popped up.
and u picked an old picture of my dreads anyhow, plus my dreads arent 'natural'.

    To me it's just hair.
If people are getting dreads to rebel or be a part of a subculture then they have sucky motives.

I found that site and wow....
"It sounds like your son and girlfriend both had their hair sectioned off and backcombed into dreads. That is one way to get dreadlocks, but true dreads are grown not made."
I guess non-natural dread are not true, but make believe.
    And:
"We were meant to have dreadlocks."

combs were invented in ancient egypt

    thats a fact
but that leads me to develop a theorie
in egypt, the rulling class did all they could to seperate themselves from the common man, proclaiming themselves gods, demanding worship
combing the hair may have been restricted to the rulers only at 1st, making them appear vissualy different may have made the common man more willingto accept them as being different..after all if the so called gods they saew every day looked just like them why couldnt the commoners also be gods as well

even then i imagine changing the natural state of hair was a way to seperate themselves from the greatter society
today we may do it to try to take back alittle control from society
society may dictate many things in upur life but at least we still can choose how to wear our hair
but in those early times it was a way not only to seperate from society, but bend society to the will of the ruling class

todayt we may get a mohawk to say..i'm not like you and don't want to be
back then however it was more like i'm better then you and you should worship me and do my bidding

combs were the tools of opression that distinguished the powerful from the weak

ok i said it was just a theorie..i dont know if its true

but if it is..i find it fascinatiing that we've come full circle
back then when everyone was a dread exceptthe priveledged few who ruled over the rest the dreads workinmg well slaving away theyre lives for the glorification of the pharoes..
then today were in a society where the majority comb theyre hair
and the dreads dread to free themselves from the magority
not in an attempt to control the masses, but perhaps many do to not be controlled

if I got pics of you they must have been from this forum. I would think that if you post pics of your hair on one forum, it wouldn't matter if they found their way to another.

And its pretty obvious that your dreads weren't natural. Its hard to find pics of natural dreads, I was just trying to promote dreads on the basketball forum that I frequent.

I like long brushed hair just as much as I like dreads. However, it would not change how I kept my hair at all. It's sort of silly to think it would.
