Ok maybe not directly. Thirteen days before the Bushs leave the White House, first lady Laura Bush unveiled two new patterns of china purchased at a cost to the White House Historical Association of nearly one-half million dollars. So why did she wait so long? Oh, maybe she ordered them last Fall and they were just now delivered. They've been occupying the White House for eight years. Why wait until the last minute if you're not purposely trying to slap the incoming first lady in the face. Oh yeah, I'm pissed about the half million bucks too. But more pissed that the first lady was as benign as her husband was dangerous and moronic for almost 8 years and then out of nowhere pulls this shit. Real weak. Source
There's that thing about them putting them in a hotel because Blair House (the traditional place for the incoming president to stay) was booked for the Australian presidents visit. Just a bunch of babies....and dividers.
Were the China mentioned, the Jefferson China? Or something along those lines? I saw a documentary late last night with Laura Bush setting the table for the Queen of England with flowers on the outter rim of the China and it was their best China that she chose to use in honour of Queen Elizabeth. EDIT: Nevermind. That wasn't the China that I saw that they used last night on the doc. Anyway, China and conventional traditions are pretty important when you are honouring distinguished guests and such. I'm not excusing it. I love getting out and using the good China though. But like the people that do this, I was brought up with the tradition.
Isn't that one of the things the First Lady is allowed and/or expected to do? Is Michele Obama grumbling about it? Won't she be allowed and/or expected to do it? ~> Don't quote me on this, but i believe that each First Lady's choice of formal china is on display in some sort of museum, so it's not likely Mrs. Bush was being insulting.
Fyre the point I was trying to make is that you don't wait until the last 13 days of your husband's final term to replace the white house china. Why waste the money? If it was good enough for 7 years, 11 months and 17 days, surely it could have been left alone for her replacement. Of course the Obamas will order new china. But do you have $500,000.00 of someone else's money to toss away on a whim?
Yeah, let's ask ourselves that ~ about the Obama's. Will THEY just toss out that china and order more? Of course they will. Wasteful? Yep. Ridiculous? Yep. And if Michele had one "classy" bone in her body, she'd be the one who abstained from following the tradition, but i won't fault her if she does it, also. You know ~ the old As-the-first-black-family blah, blah, blah , and i would expect that quite a few folks will be watching to see what she deems serviceable. Wake up ~ this is real life, and there are much bigger things for us to concern ourselves with, imho.
You sure do like to debate me don't you mama? I don't disagree with everything you posted. I just see it as Laura Bush asserting one last ditch modicum of selfish dominance by throwing away a half million dollars, knowing that the result would be used once then tossed in a hutch in a museum someplace. But why not? Her hubby threw away hundreds of trillions of dollars, tens of thousands of human lives and was absolutely complicit in the bankrupting of our country. Must be some tradition among the Texas wannabes, huh?
Did you know that it isn't tax-payer monies that support the White House Historical Association? (i just looked it up! ) So it's more to do with Historical Art, than anything else, and in THAT case, i'm down with it!
Do you honestly think I would have posted that in my first post if I didn't know that? I try to do a little homework before I post about politics, unlike some others who post here.
Yeah, right ~ like ME??? i had to look it up, not being familiar with it off the top of my head. So if it's just for the sake of Historical Art, and it doesn't cost the tax payers anything, whether or not it's a ridiculous expenditure doesn't really matter. We might as well grumble about the Obama's buying a registered, pedigreed puppy, rather than just adopting from the Humane Society. We can think whatever we want, but it's ultimately THEIR decision and THEIR money that will be spent, so it's just pretty much none of our business. That's all i'm saying ~ it just isn't anything to get worked up about. (even though we seem to have! )
They don't actually ever throw the China out. It belongs to the Estate. Much like the art, furniture, monuments, etc. that stay in the White House and never leave.
I find it hard to believe in these economic times that anyone plans on eating off of $500,000.00 china. Lock that shit in a cabinet and when things get rough sell it on ebay.
 No, silly ~ i said it because it was TRUE! Holy Mackerel ~ i was wondering if that was you when i used the dog thing... And while i think it's ridiculous to spend that sort of money on DISHES, i'd be bummed out if each First Lady hadn't continued the tradition. *** It is just sort of amazing to me that anyone could presume that they have a right to an opinion regarding what anyone else does with private resources, emphasis on the private part of that. imho, no one has the right to make choices for someone else (technically: for someone else that is capable of making their own, rational decisions). Each of us makes our own choices, and each of us lives with the consequences of the choices we make.
When people are losing their homes, the country is up to it's ears in debt, you would mourn the purchase of new dishes? I hope this tradition ends now.
A little information on the funding: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House_Endowment_Trust I'd be interested in seeing a list of the donors, but haven't found one yet. I wonder what role lobbying has in this?
