I think it is unneeded in the mainstream. Its not peace exactly, just the symbol. If it was actually FOR peace, I would be all over that. Im pretty sure it will die out soon, like other fashions. Wonder what going to be next...

Im not from the 60s but I'm sure it was pretty much the same... Maybe not, though.

Once at school this girl started complaining that I was walking too slow, and she got on my nerves, so I called her a bitch. (I'm not going to get pushed around. To me, that's not peace for yourself) She flipped and tried to beat me up, but I yet stood there. And you know what was around her neck? The fucking peace sign. I was like, screw you, you mainstream biatch.

So I know exactly what you guys mean.

I agree that the peace sign is overused.
but if we "developed" a new peace sign,
that would get just as over used.

Just wondering if anyone is aware of the original meaning of the Peace Symbol. I'm pretty sure many of you first generation hippies will know, so I'm mostly asking the younger generation. If you do know, just ask yourself if the meaning still applies to today. It does not matter who uses the symbol, imo. No meaning can be taken away by over use. Only by followers of it's meaning perverting it. Don't worry about people commercializing it, we have many more immediate problems to attend to.

I'm sorry for the confusion. I'm not talking about the hand symbol. The sparrow track.

It means victory for the sparrow as well, victory for winning the evolutionary war.

I agree. The peace sign still represents peace. We shouldn't stop believing in the symbol just because corporations and teens are using it as a fad. As long as it means the same to you, it doesnt matter what other people are doing.

The peace sign is actually an "N" and "D" together that stands for "Nuclear Disarment".

I agree with all of what you are saying. I can't stand that when i wear my peace signs now a days that i feel like everyones doing it especially when all of my peace sign stuff is from my parents the original hippies! its just unfair how they have found a way to commercialize peace, just like everything else.

I understand what you are saying completely! At school the peace sign is every where but all the conformist girls are wearing the sign on all their shirts. But its just not right. They dont understand the real meaning behind the peace sign.
Its more then a fashion statement! Its a way of life!

If you wish not to use the Peace sign, you can always express Yin Yang which is unity. Similar and Yin Yang isnt nearly as commercialized.

I tend to avoid peace signs lately--the meaning is completely gone in them. I have a good friend who owns a peace sign t-shirt and a peace sign scarf, but that's as far as she goes in promoting (or even believing in) peace. The peace sign was a new symbol in the 60s, and while it's good to have around for nostalgia's sake and for a common symbol to bind hippies together in the common eye (which I think is useful, if not really necessary), I think a new symbol should be instated. Obviously, though, it's not that simple--I just hope something comes through.

Yin Yang isn't as commercialised, but I still think a lot of people don't associate it with any real meaning. I use it significantly more than I use the peace sign, but I'm still looking for something different.

Mercedes Benz took it back. :p

The peace symbol was originally the logo of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and actually predates the Hippies, being designed in 1958. (Yeah, I am of that "duck and cover" generation of schoolkids, expecting nuclear warfare)

Of course it was a neat symbol, easy to use and ultimately represented Peace.

IMO the peace symbol is symbolic and universal and will never be watered down or overused. Everyone knows what it means, and if someone wears it, has it, etc. at least must agree with it to a point. I believe inherintly everyone wants peace.
Didn't John Lennon say to sell peace as opposed to selling war?
So long as the symbol, the word, the meaning is getting out there, so long as it survives, right?
I wear shirts with peace symbols, a ring my aunt (and namesake) got from Jimmy Hendrix, heck even my panties have peace symbols on them :)

I see a lot of girl celebs wearing the peace sign. I'm sure a lot of them believe in non-violence. However the Peace Sign is not simply against violence. Its about righting the wrongs. Making the world a better place then it was. Not just the world. Something smaller- your street, neighborhood, small town or w/e simply better then it was yesterday. A lot of simple things got changed when there became this rush to make everything better. The meaning/symbol of Peace and Love to name a few...
