It's been the cause for western European and Western prejudice and persecution against women for centuries. Personally I think people read way to close into these stories and don't realize they're just that, stories.
In regards to the "place of women" according to the Adam/Eve story, a few things to note: Rib--might not have meant rib, but "side" indicating partnership, not subservience. Marriage--when talking about marriage between Adam and Eve, it says that "man shall leave mother and father and join with wife...and the two shall be one" (or soemthing like that). To me this indicates, again, partnership. I do too think they are just stories, but important capital "T" True stories. True theologically, false scientifically.
Layers unfold in that story. One layer is no one is supposed to marry again after the so-called original marriage through Adam and Eve. To marry again = left first love plus it = adultry/fornacation. ^^Then when you get past that layer you see it been a word play. Basically, you should do what you favor rather than do what you do not favor. You should allow your favorable found meaning to apply rather than what all may come in your face in full meaning. Understand how definitions to words have a positive along side a negative meaning. The negative stuff only applies to a devil which indeed uses it against an individual.
Well, no. I stateed that it has been used to justify it, but I think the people that use it in such a way already believe that women are subservient. I think it indicates that men and women are partners.
"woman was made from man's rib to stand beside him, not from his foot, to stand beneath him." anonymous (probably a woman)
"Don't eat apples from that tree" God clearly didn't understand humans. That'd be the first thing i'd do.
