Creating a herbal smokable dmt plant, like with weed? Perhaps by selective breeding?

While there are numerous plant sources of DMT, usually the amount of DMT present is not enough to smoke from the herbal source. And so usually an extraction takes place to isolate the DMT. That's all well and good and all but it would be nice if there was a herbal source of DMT that you can smoke without extracting the DMT.......just like there is an herbal source of THC (cannabis) that you can smoke for the effects.

I remember Terrance Mckenna saying that phalaris canary grass contains a good amount of DMT compared to other plant sources, even compared to psychotria viridis. He stated this during an answer to a response to someone asking whether there is a smokable dmt plant with no extraction needed. He actually didn't go on to say that you can feel effects without extracting it but even if it wasn't possible.....wouldn't it be possible to selectively breed certain DMT plants (like phalaris canary grass) like what growers have done with cannabis? For example usually pot from decades past contained 1-5% of thc.....usually no more than 10% for the most potent at the time. Now a days it's usually between 5-15%......with the higher end THC plants being at between 15-25%. If the same thing can be done with DMT plants imagine how much easier it would get to smoke dmt from herbal sources like what is done with weed.....and since there's no noticable tolerence.....you can light up whenever appropriate . I think there is less than 1% even in the higher end DMT plants but this should matter as long as we can selectivley raise the DMT levels in these plants. That less than 1% can turn into 2%, 5%, 10% and so on.

What do you think? Do you think it is possible to create such a smokable DMT plant?

 

I would assume it's possible if the DMT can be released from the plant by heat, and if the body can absorb DMT through the lungs. But I don't know either of these things. Maybe the plant already exists and we just haven't found it? Interesting question.

I haven't seen much of any reports on erowid that discuss smoking dmt plants.....though I have read one before and recently of someone smoking the extract of the actual plant but wasn't pure dmt but the concentrate plant material.....kinda like hash. Bud or the more organic would be the idea but still.

In reference to if dmt can be absorbed through the lungs, won't it just enter into the bloodstream like extracted dmt would when it's smoked? Only with less quantity per hit? And what is the purity of extracted dmt anyway? I don't have any experience with it but isn't one hit of extracted dmt enough for a very strong trip? So it might not even take that many generations of breeding to get it to a level that say a joint or bowl of the herb could give the same effects.

Or am I just completely wrong and uninformed?

 

i see no reason why you couldnt breed say phalaris grass (sp?) to try and produce higher level dmt phenotypes. however, the change would be gradual, and to produce 'smokable" plant material for a full dmt hit, youd need several decades and thousands of dollars, just to consider it

Do you really think the shamans will let out that a plant like that existed? They will fear for it to become illegal, just looked what happened to salvia, nobody knew about it's existence till like a few decades ago, not to mention it only got any real interest a few years ago, and it is already starting to become illegal.

 

Interesting point, but how come modern science hasn't found it? Or if it has, I wonder why it isn't more widely known (I doubt scientists would keep it a secret).

I doubt all shamans are trying to keep that private since after all they never tried to keep ayahuasca private. But you maybe right......maybe one of the undiscovered tribes in the amazon know of one. If one of the discovered tribes know then I'm sure one of them would have already let Terrance Mckenna know. Of course Mckenna answered someone who asked the same question in a lecture that phalaris grass is it, but he did not elaborate saying that you indeed just smoke the plant directly.

 

Sorry to bump, but:

They didn't bother keeping Ayahuasca secret since it is VERY unlikely to become a street drug, more so than salvia.

One: It tastes GROSS! Rarely have I found people willing to drink Pedro, and ayahuasca is worse.
Two: It is to strong for your average tripper.

The only reason salvia became as common as it is, is because it is smokable. If it was a nasty tasting brew like Ayahuasca, it wouldn't be nearly as popular.
Ayahuasca might as well be a secret, nobody who isn't in this field already knows shit about it.
Another reason may be that the Shamans feel it is safe to chuck out Ayahuasca, and even extractable DMT, but a plant that you can just grow and smoke... Maybe a little dangerous for now.
I bet they just now felt that we have become ready for salvia, and they might just be giving us the keys gradually. Think about it, we first had cannabis, then we "found" (or was shown...) LSD and shrooms, then we "found" ayahuasca, and THEN salvia. Each one is more strange and powerful than the last...
They might just find it.

Not to mention, for someone to know if there is DMT in a plant, they will have to do an extraction. Try extracting ever single plant out there!

 

DMT inside plant material isn't made for smoking. It's made for making a brew. Yes, we've figured out ways to extract & purify the DMT, but that's not what Nature intended. This is why ayahuasca has healing properties, while DMT doesn't, or at least not as much.

 

yea, i believe it exists in plants as a salt, which for tryptamines generally means that you can't smoke them.

^only an inference though...

 

it might be wierd even if there was a plant potent enough with DMT. cuz you dont exactly "smoke" the plant, you reallyneed to vaporize the DMT to do it properly.
