I think it influences behavior more than appearance, but some say there's an appearance element. I don't know about that... haven't witnessed it personally so much. Although I have heard (and seen in life) that Aquarius rising tend to go gray early in life. As far as behavior, I'm an Aries rising and I don't get intimidated easily (or ever), will look you right in the eye when talking to you and have a firm handshake. Plus it's pretty easy for me to take the initiative, when I feel so inclined.
Rising sign is the sign we appear to as in front of others. Some say, this includes physical characteristics but it is not proven. Another way to view this is that rising sign of a person is what he thinks of himself and consequently how he expresses himself.
It isn't just the sign itself actually. You are basically asking about physiognomy, which is a quite detailed technique. Generally, you have to consider the rising sign, it's ruler, any planets in the 1st house, and any planets aspecting the ascendant. Planets that are above the horizon act differently than those above. You have to take all of the relevant planetary natures combined with the signs, and then figure out which elements are most prevalent, and those which are least. It's really quite difficult to do, but yes if you understand it well enough it's quite remarkable. In traditional astrology, this is an important technique because it bleeds over into other areas.
Could you provide me any website link or book which provides information on this topic of relation between Physiognomy and Astrology? I'm very interested in it but found the resources quite rare.
Probably the easiest to find is William Lilly's "Christian Astrology". It's 2 modern volumes (in the original version, it was 3 volumes, but the new one fits 3 into two books). It's in the section on natal astrology.
Yeah yeah give the guy a break. He wrote it in the 1600s. He was also involved with the anti-royalty movement, so you don't want to piss off too many people. There's no Christianity in the book though.
Enlil6, I downloaded "Christian Astrology" from internet. I didn't find anything about Physiognomy. Is it in some kind of discussion form? Or is it explained elaborately? Thanks for the suggestion though. Do have any other resources especially on the net that explains the relation between physoignomy and astrology in details or on physiognomy alone?
It's at the beginning of Book 3 (On Nativities) spread out over 1st section: Chap 106 - Of the complexion, temperament of the body, quality of planets and their sign Chap 107 - Manners of the native Chap 108 - Quality of manners discernable from the planets Chap 109 - Of the understanding of the native Chap 110 - Of the stature, shape and form of the body Chap 111 - Nature of signs, color of face and hair Chap 112 - Of the grossness or leanness of bodies Honestly this isn't done by a large number of astrologers today, so you're relatively on your own. I'm actually learning this part myself. It's one of the last things I'm concentrating on. There are other books, but they are harder to find and more expensive. I like Bonatti, but it's about $200.
Enil6, Found it. But the approach is kind of vague. Moreover, the version that I downloaded is poorly copied with numerous spellings and grammatical mistakes for some strange reason making it difficult to read. Thanks again.
No problem. Keep in mind that it was written 350 years ago. That book progressively builds on itself, so if you found it vague, it's because you haven't read the whole book. I almost gave up on astrology in frustration when I skipped around like that.
