Hey again, just thought i would start a controversial topic i have not seen posted, My question is what culture on earth was the first to ever have dreads? So i will start, the following was from a random site on google, how true it is i do not know but thats the purpose of this topic "Controversy" (Positive of course), id like to hear your opinions. So here i go: "We can not know for sure who were the first to observe the phenomenon of locks, because they seem to have been present before each culture had a writen language. Although many people hold many mistaken beliefs about dreadlocks, it was not invented by Reggae rock musicians. Dreadlocks have evolved from the earliest of times. The actual word dreadlocks comes from Jamaica, made up in the early movement of the Rastamen, dreadlocks came from the word dread for the meaning of fear and horror. I will continue to use the word dreadlocks throughout the essay, since that is what matted hair is commonly called now. Dreadlocks were worn in parts of Africa and Asia for spiritual reasons long before the Rastafarian's in the Carribbean starting wearing them. The Pharohs are believed to have worn locks, but we have no conclusive evidence to prove it. We do have evidence that King Tut had dreadlocks, and they are still intact to this day. But the first writing we have about dreadlocks is in the Veda scriptures of India, the earliest piece is dated to 1800 BC. We do have some evidence that the Celts wore dreadslocks. One of the examples is from Caesar, he described the Celts as having "hair like snakes". Next come news of past Germanic tribes wearing locks the Greeks, people of the land called Nazareth such as Samson, Pacific peoples, Naga Indians (known also as Serpent People). Today in India, dreadlocks are spotted among Sadhus (holy men). Dreadlocks are also worn in and by Ethiopia, Bahatowie priests of the Amhara nation believed to be of the Coptic faith, Senegal, Baye Fal, believed to be a sect of Islam, Mouridism, also a sect of Islam, Sudan, several small sects of Islam Kenya, Akorino of the Kikuyu nation, Oromo Beja or a sect called "the church of the living god", Ghana, the Bono of Techiman, the Fitish priests, the Somali, the Galla, the Maasai, the Mau Mau, the Tanzania, the Aborigines, and the New Guineans."
Probably not gonna find a controversy here. I think most of use are on the Caveman train. Interesting side note: The comb is one of the oldest human tools found in archeology.
The first people to have lock were probably the first humanoids to grow long hair. i think that would be homo erectus that lived all over the old world. if not homo erectus, then it would be definitely homo neanderthal. i dont know if homo erectus developed enough culture to cut there hair, but if any humanoid existed that would consistently let their hair grow it would be neanderthal since they lived in mostly in very cold climates and their body was built for that climate. the first modern humans were supposed to evolve in africa, so if there was any first man to have locks, it would have probably happened in africa with the first population of modern man. locks are not an indication of culture, more of a lack of culture, a lack of a comb or sharp rock to cut hair with
Caveman possibly, the only problem is caveman was not homosapien. Im talking about the first homosapiens cause everyone knows cave man had dreads, they also had smaller brains then we do now and were not smart enough to give a damn about there hair. The only type of humanoid closely related to homosapiens was the CROMAGNUM man, which outlived neanderthal and homo erectus and created homosapiens today. not true, dreadlocks are very much so cultural, take the sadhu culture for instance, they grow locks not because they are lazy and dont use combs, but in honor of SHIVA, so in essence that is cultural, same as the rastafari who grow locks to represent the lions mane, thats also cultural, also the egyptians bore dreads in honor of RA the sun god who also was a lion and had a dreadlocked mane, so to say dreads are not cultural is a bit off from the truth. Back to the caveman, as i said non homosapien so i should re prase the question to "Who was the first homosapiens to have dreads" thats more along the lines of what i ment, lol. Possibly, but the idea of humans coming from africa first is still highly debated amungst many, for truth is the poles have shifted 3 times that scientists know of in the history of human kind, meaning africa was not where it originally was today and most scientists agree that there are 4 different places humans could have actually came from, africa only being one idea of those 4. But i love all your answers just as well
I think what they ment was that a specific culture didnt START dreadlocks, even though some cultures use them now.
Thanx for clarifying and id have to agree!! Controversy is a good thing, it helps one understand something from another perspective, thank you all for opening my eye's to knew possibilities!!!!
isnt the main theory that there was a few pockets of human life in varying countries, and instead of being eradicated by stronger human tribes/groups (as previously thought), they kinda all merged and interbred, to produce us, as we know us. also interesting,, my sister told me the other day that modern day humans (us) who have no wisdom teeth, and have no place in their mouths for wisdom teeth, are actually evolutionary superior to people who do have wisdom teeth. this is because humans have evolved not to need them, cause we dont need/use them to chew cud..
Hey everyone truth is we could argue about evolutional theory forevore as the possibilties are endless, but not to be rude or anything, evolution isnt really the thread topic, so lets try to get back on track, thanx
well if the question is who were the 1st homosapienss then the answerr also would be the 1st homosapiens gee that was simple huh?
