Okay, heres some past info- I sectioned and backcombed my dreads about5 or 6 months ago, and on the first day, I went to the beach. Because my hair was newly sectioned, all those little lines burnt so badly. It was terrible, oozing and peeling, ughgh it was so painful and gross. Anyways, since then I've moved to a dark and desloate Washington DC. I no longer suffer from the suns rays, but that might just be cause there isn't much sun here.

I'm going on vacation next week (to the cayman islands), and they get alot of sun and they got a beach which I plan on visiting. Will I once again be burnt, or do you think my head has built enough resistance to the rays. You can still see lines on my head, but they're not as profound as before. Also, I've heard that backcombing dreads causes your scalp damage due to the constant pulling of hairs.

Anyways, to prevent burn is there any natural sunblock to put on my head? Could I perhaps just mash on normal sunblock and be sure to wash it out really good later? Must I wear a hat? What do you think I should do?
Am I the only one this has happened to?

    Thanks

Hell that sounds nasty. If that was while back haven't they filled out a little, as in not so many gaps between dreads any longer? I'd go with keeping a close eye on it and if you feel like you're going to get burnt put on a hat or stick a T-shirt over your head or something.

That's never happened to me though, Hope it doesn't. So I don't know really

    damn.
i'd say wear a hat, but if that's not possible, you'll have to slapper on some sunscreen where you need it. hell, just wash it out reallly well later, but your dreads won't fall off if you put a little bit of sunscreen on for the week.
    :cheers2:

Ha. Yeah, sunscreen or pack an umbrella to cower under. Sunburn isn't too much fun. Yeah, you should be able to wash it out of your dreads. If you want to be extra careful, there's like a concoction you can make to rinse your dreads with. It's supposed to be for like rinsing residue and stuff out of your hair. I know it's like got vinegar or something in it. Just check with one of the more knowledgeable dreadheads from the forum.

I've put sunscreen on my main part. It's just your scalp and the roots so it's not like it's gonna gunk anything up. A hat or a hair-scarf also work nicely.

Suncream is tough to get out of dreads. Find a cool hat/bandana. I use straw cowboy hats.

There not profound or anything, like newly those pictures of newly backcombed dreads, its just a faint line. I don't even think its cause of my dreads, just exposed skin where there isnt a dread. Like a part in undreaded hair. I've done no dreadballing or crochetting or anything. No rubbers either.
    Im just scarred I'll burn.
Thanks to all who advised. Looks like I'll be packing a bandana.

Yeah. That's probably your best bet. Sunscreen sucks to get out of normal hair, so it's got to be quite the chore removing it from dreads.

do you have very fair skin? i think either way you'll be safe, sun screen, hat, bandana. personally when summer comes around, i'm going to go with a bandana. :) good luck keeping your head comfy! hope the weather's nice.
