I was 14 when Woodstock took place and wanted to be a hippie in the worst way. In 1973 I went to college at a true "Hippie Haven" in California [they used to publish reviews of the currently available LSD in the school paper], but I was disappointed to discover that everyone else there was a hippie wannabe, just like me. We dressed in overalls and tie-die, did lots of drugs, saw the Dead whenever possible, etc. But once we got home for vacation, we ate Twinkies and drove around in our parents' cars, just like the "straight" kids. My freshmen friends and I got heavily into David Bowie, Mott the Hoople, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, etc. which was a 180 degree turnaround from the hippie aesthetic. So I still went to see the Dead, but I wore glitter nail polish and make-up as well. True hippies believed that they could really change the world for the better. If that's your sincere belief as well, then it doesn't matter what you wear - you're the real thing!
Exactly! Besides, who can possibly say they have the right to truly define what makes a "true" hippie and what doesn't? You are what you are and who ever you choose to associate yourself with. If you feel you're a hippie then don't let anyone tell you that you aren't. At the end of the day all that matters is you. So rock on hippie dude!
