So what is your dreamworld and how would you realise it with what kind of sustainable solutions? what kind of house, what kind of garden, what kind of things in the house and garden to keep it running?? me myself would like to have some kind of mixture between permaculture and biodynamic gardening and a house like is shown on http://www.simondale.net/house/ I would like to have sheeps grazing on the land, and for the rest it must be happy and lovely and sunny But im not sure yet about watersolutions...
i would like to accommodate as many people as possible, just to bring people around to the idea that consuming everything possible is wrong. with that in mind i would have to get about 1000 acres of land. most of which is dedicated to permaculture. then build 2-3 high rise buildings. use geothermal, wind, hydro, or solar power. free living, free food, almost free energy. the only job people would have it to educate themselves. think what people would come up with if they had all the time in the world to come up with stuff.
I appreciate communities, and the spirit of them, but I am at heart a hermit. So, my ideal situation would be with me living away from everyone but near enough to a town with likeminded individuals that I could have some companionship. I like cob a lot, but lately I've been leaning towards a cabin. I would like a woodstove, possibly a wood cookstove as well. I'd like a decent garden, and pantry space to store. I'd like a root cellar or something equal to it. I might build a separate studio out of cob for things like yoga. I'd want a sweatlodge, which I could also make out of cob. Herb gardens all around my cottage. Little bits of magic here and there. I'd like to host people where we could learn about alternative methods of living, or traditional ways of living.
I would absolutely love to live either by myself or with a few good friends, somewhere in a forest in a house like in the OP. It would have a hotspring, a stream, clearings for gardens and herb growing, etc etc.
Sounds great. Especially the community on a wider perspective thing. Than you have some privacy but still the positive things that close living communitys have! woodstoves and rootcellars are cool! I would like to have some kind of cellar that is made in the ground, like that you have just a door and a heap of earth surrounding the cellar to keep it cool. I hope that is a clear explenation haha. what do you mean by traditional ways of living? it sounds to me primitive/ bushcrafty/ survival... but that is only because im really into this stuff.. or do you mean more a cultural traditional style?
I mean both; I live in Appalachia and it traditionally was quite survivalist and primitive. I'm not sure if you're very familiar with Appalachia in Europe, but traditionally it was quite rugged and on the land. We Appalachians are hardy folks And quite different from the stereotypical views as well!! Although, to be honest, many Appalachians have began to adopt the stereotype. So culturally I'm talking a mixture of (traditional) Appalachian folklore and lifestyle which already was a combination of the scotch-irish immigrants and local native beliefs. And I completely understood your description of the celler! I really love this stuff.
An advanced commune with freegans. Advanced as in solar power and whatnot, and not completely primitive.
I didnt heard about them before, but did some little research and the first thing i saw were the mountains on a picture and they were just beautifull. Also read something about the folk and i really like it that they stayed somewhat longer traditional then others. I think it is important to know your sustainable crafts And the music must be sounding cool... Anyway if i think about music, i should be able to make some, or at least get some kind of sustainable durable not polluting way of getting some energy to listen to some! im not sure about the last one though. i really like to live just in harmony with nature i love this stuff too
an earth sheltered longhouse, capable of housing up to 32 small families (albeit without incredible comfort) of my own design. connected to an earth sheltered stable for our livestock. a connected atrium as well as separate greenhouses to lengthen the growing season. solar power. a poor girl can dream.
You know what they say. If you write it down, expect it. So here goes... Solar Power for Water Heating and Lights Grey Water Cycling system No Clutter Greenhouses and Sunboxes for forcing crops in Winter Raised bed gardens for herbs and vegetables Outside kitchen for summer cooking Lots of space to run around A treehouse (never got one as a kid) Nearby houses with people willing to share the work and rewards of gardening Root cellar Water collection barrels under the gutters Clothesline Lots of bookshelves and comfy places to read Possibly a Cat and a Dog MMMM, I love it
oh i also would like to give some bee's a home, because bees are dying out (and honey is ice and beewax is very usefull). sometimes i think that i could also have a old house on a nice place because than you reuse the house instead of taking new materials to build something. Anyway old houses can be quite cute and nice especially if they are made from wood.
I envision an America 25 years from now with overgrown highways, empty gas stations and abandoned factories. With 100,000,000 cars on the road now there won't be a drop of gas to make them run within most of our lifetimes - perhaps I will acquire one of these and strip out the engine, retrofit a mustang to be pulled by a couple of horses when i want to get around. The wooden fences of suburbia will need to be torn down to make room for community farms to supply food for everybody. Any abandoned building will be owned by nobody and be assessable to travelers and traders. Personally, I would like to build a house out of hay with land to grow hemp, beans, and pasture for my horses. I would have a solar panel roof for a little electricity and warm water, and an outdoor solar oven for cooking, and rain water collection for drinking water. I think the dump would be my favorite place to go - digging for rare metals and other treasures that were shamelessly tossed out as outdated television sets and computer chips in an age of deadly abundance.
Me too! I've been saving lumber from old decks and garages. Now I've got to get building. lol Great topic! So many posting want the same things. Simplicity and self sufficiency. I think theres a movement happening. I've been working towards the 'Mother Earth News' life for the past decade.
