Alright, so i just moved into a new house and upon getting there i had to wait 3-4days for the TV/Internet dude to get here. He came and got the net hooked up today Router is on and lights are glowing. The problem is my laptop has been picking up other peoples wireless internet in the neighborhood, but it WONT pick up my own router that is directly downstairs. hope someone can figure this out :cheers2:
You need to go in and setup your router with the IP address of the computer. You will need to go into the settings of the router. I would recomend going to the Linksys web site for instructions.
It sounds to me like the router isn't assigning an IP address to your laptop. Go into your router control panel (the router's IP, I think linksys's is 192.168.1.1) and see if DHCP is enabled. If not (and you're not so comfortable messing around in the CP), enable it. Otherwise you'd have to manually assign the laptop an IP address. Hope that helps, -Jake
Yeah, I'm in a computer class at school that's about networking so I'm somewhat familiar with this stuff. It's actually run by CISCO, a server/hardware company that now owns Linksys. Not always the most entertaining task (troubleshooting network problems), but might be good for some easy money some day.
^^^ fuck yea.. network technician.. cake walk job.. tons of cash.. @smokinjuana.. if you ever own a router you will learn to memorize the IP address.. seeing as you will probably need to access it a few times throughout owning one :cheers2:
Thanks to all of you who replied. Just got home will be tryin to get into the router. Have to remember my username/pass
Yeah, i got into my router today. everything was on. I think it maybe be picking the connection up now. But why would the wireless router which is like directly a floor below me only give my Lappy ONE bar of signal? im like loosing connection sometimes and pages can take forever to load
because unless its a Wireless-N.. you're not gonna get more than 2-3 bars when upstairs.. im guessing you have the common Wireless-G(or GS)
