hi all, i have had me dreads a couple of years now. i used to do the palm rolling thing a lot and use a needle to get the loose hair in but got lazy a while back and just decided to leave em a while and see how they go. at the mo i have a LOT of loose hair so im thinking of getting the roots done but im not too sure what way is the best!? this is my third time having dreads as the first 2 times i got them touched up a few months after getting them and the people screwed em up so im a bit paranoid of other people doing them now! any tips on how to get them nice and tight at the roots? cheers RuDDiGeR
Hey Ruddiger Its perfectly normal to have between and inch and 3 inches of hair at the root, so don't worry You don't need to do anything to the roots, just leave em to do their own thing, but if you want them to look uniform etc then crotchet method is the best for it although your just breaking all the hair. Good luck Alex
cheers man, i have done the let them be thing but they aint dreading that well and the ones that are are going pretty flat so i recon its time to get em good and tight. is there any other methods than the croche hook thing? seems like the tutorials on dreadheadhq and stuff just break a lot of hair and dont do much very quick!
yes! don't crochet them, root rub them. when i had dreads, i root rubbed every couple of weeks and it helped them lock up at the root much faster, and that hair was super healthy, didn't damage it at all (i found this out when i cut them off). when i cut the dreads off, the only parts of my hair that WEREN"T damaged were the parts where i hadn't palmrolled or backcombed or crocheted or any of that. the part of my hair that was still salvageable as non dreaded hair was the new growth since i put the dreads in, and all of that was root rubbed. so root rubbing is easy, after washing and letting the dreads throroughly dry, just grab the dread at the root, right where it's turning from tight dread into loose, undreaded hair. then rub briskly (without too much pressure) against the scalp, in a clockwise motion. this causes the hair to loosely knot. leave it alone until you wash again. those baby knots will tighten up and get more crazy, which will help them stay when you wash again. i kept up on this, usually every week, or if i was lazy, every 2 or 3 weeks. i got int the habit of doing this while watching movies or tv, and it became second nature. kept my dreadies looking hawt. good luck
I try the root rubbing and it always makes my head hurt but yeah it does work really well I have one in the back that was almost completely formed out from root rubbing
dont do anything you made a mistake by crochetting that creates alotta dammage and loose hairs so u have to keep dammaging it week after week big mistakew root rubbing if gentles ok too much can do dammage but bnot as basd as palm rolling or anywhere near ad bad as crochet since u crochetted u will need toime to recover you will always have a difference between natural and crochetted but thats what u get for poking holes in your dreads give it 6 months to fdo what it does and it will be fine but u need several months recovery time and to learn the lesson that dreads are not meant to be perfect..they should be like finger[prints or snowflakes each one unique and beautiful because of the imperfections
yeah I really just got tired of rubbing my roots all the time trying to make them perfect I'm very lazy when I want to be. I really think everything is way too tedious at the moment
thanks for the suggestions and replies! i did use the root rubbing method for a good while but the problem is my hair doesn't seem to want to dread, i think i might go for the croche method, worst that can happen is it will break some hair but if its quite bad i can let the loose hair grow for a bit dreadball it and get it back into the dread. i am aiming to have them dreaded right up to the roots because at the moment with the loose hair i pretty much have a full head of hair and all the dreads just hang down under it! is there any other methods that may get them tight without doing much damage!?
you will never get them dreasded right to thye roots that just wont happenh how longs the hair at the roots thats undreadfed? an inch or 2? thats perfectly normal the worse that can hasppen with crochetting is u perforate the dread so much it falls off the best that can happen is u get stuck having to crochette every week forever dont do it its not smart stop worrying about the dreads and leave em be and they will take care of themselves lwets see some pics of what u concider alot of loose hairs lets see some of your roots you call a problem i bert ya anything we see no problemsaat all your just over osessing over every loose hair that will only give u trouble and breed disatisfaction leave emj be and love em the way they are
youtubes also got alotta dready vids with lies petpetuating the wax scam..probly more loies then truths in fact so u gotta hunt around
Dread-balling stray hairs and poking them into the loose root growth, then doing a bit of regular root-rubbing until they're properly caught in there should help create some new root knots for you, and put a bit of volume back in them again.
