only take this halfway seriously. and understand that i'm all over the place in this post :D

so the other night, me and a friend of mine were hitting the vaporizer and watching the CNN special Marijuana Inc., and of course my mind started racing with ideas. So they legalize medical marijuana in California. Apparently they tax the shit out of it. Our government is collecting money off of something they so strictly despise. Our president wants to have another stimulus bill passed which is awesome and bad all at the same time. In my opinion, it's just gonna mess our country up worse down the line.

So me and my friend get to talking and decide we want to write to our goverment. We want to tell them to completely legalize marijuana and tax the hell out of it. Because i am sorry, no matter how broke someone might be, if you like to smoke up you'll find the money to buy it. So the country starts making money back, and we can smoke freely. Problem solved lol.

and this my friends, is why i love smoking. Just reading what i just typed makes me laugh.:smilielol5:

there is 1 huge hurdel in that idea which most pot heads dont understand or even think of

the second you legalize MJ in the USA, you are pretty much accepting that a multi-billion dollar war on drugs was a failure

in times like these, i doubt the government is willing to show/accept that they just wasted billions of dollars in trying to stop people from smoking a joint here and there when the economy is in the shitter

Times Change. Although I agree it will be difficult to convence a government to just close up the DEA. Marijuana is about half of their business. The process is going to be slow and painful. Do I think pot will be legalized in my lifetime. Maybe.

There are other factors here as well. There are currently a lot of people in prison for drug charges. Most of them for marijuana. If Marijuana were made legal tomorrow about a third of the prisions would need to close. It's big business. For all of the jobs and industries that would be created there would be additional jobs lost and business will loose money if Marijuana is legal.

Because of this Big Business is not for it and will lobby against it. The Pharma Companies don't like it either. Where would they be if everyone was growing their own. As much as we would all like this to happen it is going to be an up hill battle. I wish everyone good luck.

its sad that all of the major things standing in the way of legalization are rooted in our countries deep corruption. what a horrible cycle we are all in

i watched that the other night too. Thats pretty crazy, because my friends and i were talking about the same exact thing. The government just needs to swallow their pride and realize that the screwed up making weed illegal. Some of the reasons it is illegal in the first place are very racist...

This article has a lot of info about why weed was originally made illegal.

In my oppinion, this is one of the largest reasons that marijuana remains illegal. i am sure i am not completely politically literate, but this is just my .02c.

but honestly? did they expect it to work? persuade thousands to just change their minds? you can't just end drugs... it's stupid, as much as i think badly of some other substances in the U.S.

ive thought basically the same thing about legalization and i agree with you startreken on how difficult it would be to just release the cannabis offenders and to shut down the DEA's marijuana control

the war on drugs has cost the American people over a trillion dollars.

the government know its harmless but doubt it will happen. hopefully Obama may see sense and maybe in 10 years or so it may be less strict or something but even if Obama does want it legalised it still isnt 100% up to him, there are people behind him that have more power then.

This police chief talks some good shit though :

Too many people would lose thier jobs if MJ were legalized, and not just cops but prison guards too. Those are two of the most powerful unions in the country. The main reason weed was made illegal in the first place was so all the cops who would have been laid off at the end of prohabition would have employment, you think it was a coinisidence it happened in 1938 just when the writing was on the wall about the 21st amendment.

As mentioned before, you have to think of all the industries it would affect. Pharmaceutical companies are BIG business in the United States, and if you would legalize marijuana, theory is that they would lose lots of revenue because people start hitting a joint instead of popping a pill.

What would be interesting to see is if the Rx drug utilization in California has increased at less of a pace than the rest of the nation, and maybe use that as a selling point to the pharmaceutical companies that they will not lose business if marijuana is legalized.

well it's pretty obvious that we've already wasted a TON of money on the drug war and we aren't getting anywhere, so to continue wasting more and more money is just... well, a waste. personally i think that weed should be made legal with restrictions (18+, no driving while high, growing should be illegal without some sort of permit). it should be heavily taxed... personally i think prisoners should grow it (obviously under heavy supervision) because it would give them work to do and then they could tax it and stuff.

but i think if they ever do go this direction, it would be better to legalize it in one state, just a few, for like a set amount of time to see if it works. that way it'll be somewhat controlled.

i agree weed shouldn't be a crime man, and also that cigarettes are a serious health problem to us. but still why the fuck would we wanna ban them? i mean they are very unhealthy, but who are me or you to say that if someone wants to have a cig, they are a criminal?

i say peple can do whatever they want, its their life, you wanna smoke bud? smoke it. you wanna get cancer from cigs and die, do it.

well the problem i have with cigs is that you're burning lots of chemicals and releasing them into the atmosphere. also secondhand smoke and all that. weed doesn't really do that... idk i wasn't being serious with that post because i know its going to take a long time for cigs to become illegal, if it ever happens. i just think cigs have more effects of other people besides the person smoking them.

i agree with the restrictions bit. i mean, if alcohol, which kills people everyday can remain legal, why not marijuana? the government would still be able to get kids in trouble because no one pays attention to the age limits anyway. i think it's just all ridiculous.
