How can I see what's in my dreads?

I've been wondering lately whether there might be anything left in my dreads from my dodgy dread-kit beginnings.
It's been about 5 months since I stopped using wax. In the first couple of weeks I used a LOT of Lock Peppa, and it was also used very generously when my hair was first backcombed. My hair went up to less than half its original length, it was combed so tight. I've seen a lot of post-backcombing pics where people's hair is really no shorter than beforehand...my hair must be very tightly bunched up.
There are portions that feel rock-hard, in comparison to the newly knotted growth that's a lot softer.
I really did use a great deal of wax at first too.
Can anyone think how best to find out what might be inside my dreads without disrupting them? Could the hardness really be leftover wax still or might it just be that so much hair is so very tightly bunched and knotted in together? I experimented with rubbing some conditioner into one of the "knuckles" and was able to push and stretch it out a bit...
Overall I'm inclined to think that it probably can't all be wax...but am still curious.

very hard dreads (when they're not very fat) are most of the time wax.. you can check by picking a needle or something and try to put it through, when something comes out at the other side that feels waxy, it probably is.

I'm not too much of a dread expert being that my own have only just hit the 2 month mark, but if its any comfort I lightly backcombed mine in, have since done NOTHING, and have lost 2-3 inches of length from my previously shoulder length hair. My hair (baby-fine, poker-straight, caucasian fluff) has curled, coiled and generally bundled itself up at a speed that has been quite... interesting, to say the least. Half of the ends have already blunted themselves and the rest are a mass of squiggles and strange loopy shapes. Of those that have blunted, several dreads are smooth, firm, with little stray frizz, and already looking like they're well on their way. In others, the hair has coiled ITSELF up so tightly it feels quite hard.

I guess this just happens. My LIGHT backcombing has resulted in mucho hair shrinkage, so I figure this is just the dreading process in action. I guess if you backcombed tightly to begin with and lost length this would only otherwise be lost as the hair begins to dread all on its own. At the same time, all hair is different and dreads in its own unique kooky way (and time frame), and its this very uniqueness that makes them so f**king lush! :D

As for the wax, peppa etc: if you're concerned about residue check out the icky wax removal thread for the deep cleanse recipe. I've not used it myself but I hear it comes highly recommended.

    Peace and good luck!

id definately go through tyhe deep cleanse wax removal thread rewad it all ..it cant hurt to agressivlry go at it and try to make sure u get as much was out as u can

lock peppa is mostly rosin, if you ever played violin, chello, and bowed stringed instrument you used rosin on your bow, its like a hard rock that when rubbed on the bow causes flakes that are sticky, they cling to the bow hairs and i supose help cause the vibration
when your combining these flakes that esentialy are just that rock hard crap broken up into millions of peices, then get all those stuck in wax that haredens itself (but remains pliable) your definately going to have dread hardening
all dreadheadhq stuff is crap, the only thing not too harmful is theyre soap

after usinbg lock peppa howed your head feel?

the lock pewppa also i heare is useless u apply it andf 1st wash its gone..if u didnt cake your head in wasx that is
so the good news is as you remove leftover wax the lock peppa should go with it without needing special effort aimed specificly at removing ther flakes

and instead of poking a pin thoutgjh (seriusly how can u even tell if a pins waxy unless it had a rewally thick coating) id just do a serius series of wewax remolvals.. when you see what comes out you'll know what was in..

*rubs dreads round a bit to lure out a nice Bach sonata*

Umm, soaringeagle, the Lock Peppa. It didn't give my head any particular feeling. It created a very sticky-dry texture to the touch I suppose. It seemed like it was helping, or at least doing what it was designed to do, inasmuch as it increased the friction between hairs. I suppose someone with incredibly silky straight unknottable hair may see some benefit from it. But now you've told me what it actually is...mmmmm tasty. I was looking through DHHQ's FAQ page today, looking at what they say about wax. These people really believe their own lies?! lol

Yeh I reckon some deep-clean sessions are a good idea.

Mabster (the spelling you are after is 'naive') they're a bit too solid for fingery investigations, plus I kinda want to avoid disrupting them.

Bring on the deeeeep clean :D
