John Peel has suffered a fatal heart attack while on holiday in Peru. It's the way he would've wanted to go: in Peru. This is the single most upsetting piece of news I've ever received, the man was a fucking legend and I seriously doubt anyone will ever be able to replace him.
Quite... so sad, he's been on the radio all my life and has a more cutting edge music collection than any young trendy or finger on the pulse DJ you can mention. "Hello and this is John Peel with Bastard Bastard Kestrel in session" this was always what I'd say if I wanted to do John Peelism At least the afterlife will be more hip now...
Peel Sessions listings of bands Peel has given air time to and broken in the music industry http://www.vheissu.freeserve.co.uk/ John Peels website from BBC radio1 http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/alt/johnpeel/ you can listen again to his program Listen to home truths on BBC radio4 recorded here http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/presenters/peel_biog.shtml http://www.bbc.tv/radio1/alt/johnpeel/peelenium.shtml The Peelenium took four tracks taken from each year of the last century and was introduced by The Voice, usually on tape but with a live performance on a Thursday night from Peel Acres. Thus stretching from 1900 to the Millennium, it was broadcast during the last hundred shows of 1999.
Just read this if you need any proof that the man was a legend http://www.rocklist.net/festive50.htm If you ignore Cinerama, there's most of the best music of the past 30 years on there.
The index of his recordings is like a who's wo in the world of music. Which peel sessions stand out the most to you? Looking through there I see a few bands that I know members from, and even they were recorded by him. He did a lot for the US/UK music scene
I don't know but I want half of them at least I know that, I've heard they might ALL be re-released! He did a lot for the US/UK music scene, he was a DJ in the US for a while as I recall. http://www.bbc.tv/radio1/alt/tracklistings/peel_tracklistings_2003.shtml John Peel Tracklistings - 21/10/04 Smashing Pumpkins - '1979' - (Hut) The Cure - 'Desperate Journalist' - (Fiction) Joy Division - 'She's Lost Control' - (Strange Fruit) The Pixies - 'Monkey's Gone To Heaven' - (4AD) Led Zeppelin - 'Communication Breakdown' - (Atlantic) The Deftones - 'Minerva' - (Sire) Cranes - 'Jewel' - (Wergo) Nirvana - 'Heart Shaped Box' - (Geffen) David Bowie - 'Saturday Night' - (EMI) The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - 'Swampsnake' - (Mercury) Mogwai - 'Killing All The Flies' - (PIAS) Tricky - 'Moody' - (Epitaph) Placebo - 'The Bitter End' - (Virgin) The Beatles - 'Eleanor Rigby' - (Apple) The Rolling Stones - 'Paint it Black' - (Decca) Janis Ian - 'Tea and Sympathy' - (Sony) Thin Lizzy - 'Don't Believe A Word' - (Warners) The Clash - 'White Riot' - (Sony) AFI - 'Girl's Not Grey' - (Nitro) Blink 182 - 'Down' - (Island) The Cocteau Twins - 'Lorelei' - (4AD) My Bloody Valentine - 'I Only Said' - (Sony) Sneaker Pimps - 'Low Place Like Home' - (One Little Indian) Tom Waits - 'Looking for The Heart of Saturday Night' - (Anti/Epitaph) Supergrass - 'Alright' - (Parlophone) The Cooper Temple Clause - 'New Toys' - (RCA) Scarling - 'Crispin Glover' - (Sympathy for the Record Industry) Interpol - 'NYC' - (Matador) Jimi Hendrix - 'Are You Experienced' - (MCA) Randomly picked show listing below John Peel Tracklistings: 25/3/2004 Martyn Hare - 'Untitled (12")' (Emetic) Hyper Kinako - 'Don't Delete My Frog (CD Single)' (Unknown) Spillsbury - 'Schlagziele (LP - 'Raus')' (L'Age D'or) Les Hommes Sauvages - 'Hotel Sur Einsamkeit (LP - 'Playtime')' (CDR Demo) Part Chimp - 'Dark Entries' (Peel Session) Hassle Hound - 'Saltwater Pharmacy (EP - 'Sun/Hasslehound')' (Textile) Bounty Killa - 'K to the A (7")' (Gun Shop) Deverova Chyba - 'Heading For (LP - 'Do Strain')' (Free Dimension) The Robbins - 'Just Like A Fool' (Pig's Big 78) OCS - 'Untitled (LP - '2')' (Narnack) Alton Stitcher - 'When It's Time for the Whippoorwill to Sing (LP - 'I Hear A Sweet Voice Calling')' (Center for Public Hisory) Nightwalker - 'Jeopardy (12")' (Gain) Part Chimp - 'Dr Horse' (Peel Session) Bearsuit - 'Going Steady (LP - 'Cat Spectacular')' (Fortuna Pop) Some Other Place - 'Enter (LP - 'To Be Continued')' (Free Dimension) Wizzbit - 'Old Skool (12")' (Road) Numbers - 'Drunk With Pain (LP - 'in My Mind All the Time')' (Tigerbeat6) Rampage and Revolution - 'Repeat Offender (12")' (Future Dance) Adem - 'Ringing In My Ear (LP - 'Homesongs')' (Domino) Tanya Stevens - 'Little white Lie (7")' (VP) Part Chimp - 'Monkey Slaughter' (Peel Session) Antifamily - 'Staring At A Piont (CDR)' (White Label) Young Heart Attack - 'To The Teeth (LP - 'Mouthful of Love')' (XL) Cinelux - 'Hollis (EP - 'Pardon My French')' (Peter, I'm Flying) The Edmund Fitzgerald - 'Formula' (CDR Demo) Dezo Daz feat. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/news/altnews/041026_john_peel.shtml Shit... i liked him, great loss and a great shame...R.I.P
Sad news. And he introduced so much new music into the mainstream - everything from Jefferson Airplane through punk to more recent stuff...he will, I'm sure be remembered as one of the most influential DJ's of all time, and a major figure in the development of British pop music.
I honestly can't think of a single person in the music world alive or dead that I'd miss more than Peely, loved the guy to bits. A true legend of our times. God bless and rest in peace John Peel.
