I became sexually active in the mid 60's and then it was really hard to get laid, primarily because women were afraid of pregnancy and the pill wasn't readily available. There was a huge social stigma for girls who put out. There was a lot of heavy petting going on but not much intercourse and oral sex was barely conceivable even if you could get laid. Everything changed by the early 70's. If you didn't grow up repressed in the 50s you really can't understand how liberating the 60's were in the whole society. Being "promiscuous" didn't have nearly the stigma that it once did. Everybody was open to experimenting. Unwanted pregnancies were easily avoidable and the diseases were all managable. By the early 70's you could get laid easily and blow jobs were plentiful. There wasn't much anal sex though - it kind of assumed the social taboo that blow jobs once held. The advent of AIDS really screwed up the whole dynamic by the early 80s. Everyone was afraid to have sex but it seems to me that oral sex had less of a perceived chance of passing along disease so it was entirely normal to have dates with women where you only had oral sex until it developed into a longer term relationship. Can't speak to today because I've been monogomous for some time.
