my mom is the kind of lady who eats low carb to count calories. she binges on things like heinz ketchup because it's 'low in points.' this drives me absolutely insane! i'm a whole foods eater, and think that she's treating her body like hell. she is very stubborn to listen to me because i eat 'high calorie healthy' - peanut butter, nuts, grains, veggies, etc. i am repulsed and bothered by her mentality. does anyone have suggestions and/or book suggestions that might cater to someone like ma?
the schwarzbein principle is a whole foods low carb book if you can get her to read "the crazy makers", she might rethink the whole heinz ketchup thing. good luck. she might not be ready to accept the whole foods paradigm yet. i have inlaws that eat exclusively processed foods, and while it's enough to make me want to puke, there's no way that they're gonna switch over to real food just because i think what they're eating is disgusting and unhealthy.
Tell her that none of the fad diets out there have it right, they use marketing and single studies to try to sell their product. If she is into the high fats diet let her know that its metabolic pathway is ketosis and it is toxic, its ok for short periodsd of time but in the long run it leads to liver, kidney, and brain problems. Carbo loading is just as bad in the long run as well due to high glucose levels. Tell her to just eat a balanced diet with moderate amounts of fat(try to stay away from mainly saturated fats but you do need some), a moderate amount of carbs for energy and plenty of excerise( tai chi and yoga are good ones for helping to maintain good muscle and joint health). The trick is to balance your calorie intake with your calorie needs. Active people need more, sedentary people need less.
It is soo hard to try & convince people who eat that "meat & potato" or processed food crap! I used to try but now it is a waste of breath. If they ask for my opinion then I give it ,,,, thats it. My friend once said " you can't flock a dead horse" . And it is true,,, my parents eat like crap and well they are stuck in that mentality so I just don't bother anymore with it .
