well, i've loved and cared for a doz bratty squirrels, a couple cunning of racoons, a totally sweet doe fawn, a very grouchy ungrateful crow, a couple of shy gopher tortoises, assorted small birds and right now a couple of orphan flying squirrels. tho i love them and cater to them i can't call them pets. i mean, i don't want to have to call them pets because that means a failure. it means they can't be released, they are too wounded, damages permanent and insurmountable so in the wild they will die.

i've only had 1 failure (knock on wood). she seems content enough but it would have been beautiful to see her fly.

I'm in SoCal, and thanks to stringent laws, most exotic pets are illegal. Even ferrets are illegal!

this isn't as "exotic" as a mountain lion or anything, but I used to be roommates with a sweet little hedgehog. c:

    ooo, wallabies are absolutely adorable!

did you grow up with any pets?

I once saw some baby armadillos for sale on petfinder.com (you should check out that website). I would have added a couple to my family, but after doing some research, I knew I wasn't ready for the level of responsibility it takes to raise armadillos. :c

sugar gliders are also endearing, but I hear they're nocturnal and extremely loud!

not only are sugar gliders nocturnal and noisy but ya need a huge cage for them. they're kinda like my flying squirrels. flyers don't make very good pets. they're also noisy and nocturnal and need a big cage. and once they reach a certain age they become quite aloof. and they're very bitey. they nip as a form of communication. i can't wait to set my orphan flyers free. they're cute but they're also little asspains.

i wouldn't think dillos would make very good pets either. i mean, i can't imagine they'd be very affectionate. i've wanted a wallaby too but yep they're waaaay spendy. ya know what i'd like to have? a wombat. how cute are those! i haven't looked into obtaining a wombat but i'm betting they're at least as spendy as a wallaby, if you can get them at all.

apparently, armadillos actually are really affectionate and they'll fallow you around the house like a love sick puppy.

the only thing is that armadillos take a LOT of effort and devotion -- which is difficult when you're going to school and working.

yea i heard gliders can be pains sometimes. i cant even imagine walking into a house and seein a dillo walkin around lol. i was lookin at de skunked skunks too cuz my friend had one and it was so sick. and yea the only thing bout these exotic's is how much effort they require on our part, lol but i bet if we spent all the time we spend on here we'd be all set.

well, color me surprised. we have dillos aplenty around here. funny prehistoric lookin critters with bad eyesight. they'll bumbled right into your shin, sniff ya and then run off in a panic. i would have never thought they'd be lovey to humans.

why would you want a wild pet that has not been bred to live in captivity?
there are enough feral, starving, stray and abused animals out there, why would you want to spend tons of money taking a wild creature from its home where it belongs and make it live with you...?

    adoption.

who are you aiming this at? probably cause some are bred to live in captivity, i agree if you take an animal out of the wild, your a dumb f**k. like chimps!!!
but not everyone wants the same basic pets... maby they rescued an injured wild animal? How about zoo's these days. wild animals being caged for "entertainment" or circus animalllllllsssssss
and- other animals may not be common but make good pets...
depends on what you think EXOTIC is.... wallaby i would deffinatley say is exotic....

we adopted our dog and cat.

Lots of 'exotic' animals that are born in captivity are still not suitable to live with a pet. I think it's very annoying and sad to see people with these kinds of animals because they don't want that boring 'basic pet'. Leave those hedgehogs and wallabies be, you're not cool with whoring it around.

Idk man. Its not that bad. What are you suposed to do with captive born animals then? Kill em? Its not sad to see people with animals that arent common. They could be giving it the only home available, and also they are saving it from the harsh real WILD life, where they fight to survive every day. And OK yeah it is annoying when people use their animals for attention, but you cant say everyone gets them for that reason, maby they just love the animal????

Hedgehogs are cool. Wallabies no. thats to wild.... anything that COULD be a house pet sure, but when you get into weird shit like mountain lions and lynx thats just weird....

Of course it depends per animal, but some are born in captivity because there's a market for them, so it's a lame excuse to sell those animals still as a pet. And of course there are some exotic animals that are indeed suitable to have as a pet, but I've seen myself that there's a lot of people that don't think about all those aspects and just want a cool exotic pet.
Oh yes, they could always go to some zoo or wildpark etc. if they have been rescued from their captivity. There's almost always a better place then put it in a household.

there is no argument for buying wild, exotic pets just because they have already been born in captivity, or are already captured.
if you buy them, you are funding that industry. as long as there is a market, those animals will continue to be kept in captivity.

adopting from a rescue organization is a much better alternative.
or volunteer at a wildlife rescue if you really must associate with wild animals.

ah, well... you know... exotic animals arent bad as pets, and they need homes too. but besides that yeah, its horrible when people are idiotic and buy on impulse and dont even know how to take care of the animal. And no they cant all go to the zoo because, well idk where u are but here, alligators are popular reptile pets. i think theyre illegal in most places but EVERYONE buys them and tries to get rid of them once they start to get big. Zoos do not take thoes. Some get sent to Gatorland in florida, which is basically a home for alligators where they are kept somewhat in the wild but fed and taken care of. I believe gatorland takes all of the unwanted ones, SOME of them.
