Are you sure you wanna do that? Your hair is naturally black right? If so, it's gonna take several bleaching sessions, depending on how white/blonde you want it to look. This means it's going to destroy your hair and make it all dried out and hard to manage (I know because the tips of my hubby's mohawk are bleached, and he only did it once) However he got his done at a salon becuase I can't stand the smell of the bleach stuff, so I can't really help with the how-to's.. but just wanted to make sure you knew it would wreck the condition of your hair!
Like Bree said it really does dry out your hair. But if this is something that you really want to do, just make sure that after you are done with the bleaching process, use a hot oil treatment once a week for a few weeks afterwards and that will help with the dryness. As for how to do it....if you are doing it yourself at home you can get home bleaching kits wherever you can buy hair dyes in your area. I've used plenty of these a few years ago, I was changing my hair color every couple of months, and they work pretty well depending on how dark your hair is to begin with. If it's really dark you will have to do it more than once, but space them out with the hot oil treatments in between so it doesn't completely ravage your hair. Are you planning on dying it a different color afterwards or just keep it bleached?
a quote from here, about damage http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/gen99/gen99504.htm "Anyway the color added (and the bleaching) does not affect the hair inside the scalp that will grow with its natural color." So I'm not worried about damage, yes my hair is black, im just wondering what the proper stuff to use is. and going to a salon will not happen with me, I've only ever went to a hair joint for 6 months of my life, the rest of the time I cut it myself. so I guess ill check out the local drug store, for that stuff. As for color this town doesnt seem to have anythign good for color, I was plannign on leaving it white for a while unless I dont like it, ill go blue I guess
flash lightning is awsome bleach but you might need two kits. the best way to look after your hair after bleaching is to smother it in mayo and leave it in also long as possible. on several occasions i've bleached my hair 2 or three times in a row, literally one after the other. mayo is a miracle worker.
also don't wash or brush your hair the day of bleaching, you'll need the natural oils to protect your scalp from burning too much.
