I read somewhere years ago that Julia Roberts showed up in torn jeans and barefeet for an interview with the director or producer of the film "Pretty Woman." I have recently joined the ranks of the unemployed and hope to be interviewing again soon. Unfortunately, the weather here in New England at the moment isn't conducive to venturing about in one's barefeet. However, I would like to go barefoot to one job interview when the cold weather breaks. I could tell whoever it is that's conducting the interview that I got so excited about the interview with his/hercompany that I forgot to put shoes on.:hat:
This invites multiple comments. I've heard/read somewhere that Julia Roberts is almost always barefoot. One of us, but with enough money that no one would dare hassle her about bare soles wherever she went or whatever she did. I HATE being cold. As much as I like barefoot freedom, I gladly put on warm socks in the winter. I was laid off a year ago - that was before the economy went to hell. I landed a job fairly quickly and now work from home but with significant (~30%) business travel. The travel part isn't great, but working from home has its advantages and disadvantages. I can be barefoot 24 hours a day for several days straight when the weather's nice - and still make great money. Unless it's a complete blow-off interview, and you're willing to be marched out, forget the barefoot part. When I interviewed for my current position I showed up in a suit, tie, well groomed hair, the appropriate professional accessories (carefully crafted resume, leather notebook, nice pen, etc.), and socks and polished, professional, uncomfortable shoes! Yeah, good luck with that approach. I'm sure you're kidding about how you'll approach things when the time comes. When you're out of work is the hardest time to find work. My personal advice is to take every interview extremely seriously. Make them want you and get the offer. If you don't like it, you can always turn it down. Don't trivialize anything. Sorry, I didn't mean to lecture. I've been through the layoff thing twice and know it sucks. My self-esteem took quite a blow both times. The first time, the site was being shut down; the second time the company pulled all funding from my department. No performance issues, but it still sucks! Take the interviews seriously and you'll be fine. By the way, I shocked my boss after I was hired by showing up at the airport in flip-flops. Now he knows what he's got! He's pretty cool with it. I don't think he'd ever travel in flip-flops, but he's okay with it. As long as I'm productive and serious when required, I can sit bare-ass naked on a conference call! (Oooh, bad visual, forget I said that!). Wait till you're hired to test the limits!
Welcome to the ranks of the unemployed, so am I. I'll have to agree with Straittoes here, being "creative" in the job interview process is not something you may not want to try, especially when you are without an income. The hiring managers conducting job interviews rake you over the coals enough, why give another reason to reject you? Even though I hate shoes, there is a time and place for them. Call me a fuddy duddy, but unless you are interviewing for something as a life guard, you better think twice about showing up shoeless. Trust me, I've had more interviews that I'm willing to admit. It's tough enough when the job market is tight. BTW, forget the Julia Roberts thing, celebrities can get away with things us everday folks can't. Just my $0.02
I was barefoot for my job interview. Now it was for a historic theme park where many people go barefoot, but yes I did show up without shoes. I've been working there for more than ten years now. I also showed up for the -very informal, since I knew the people and had done some barefoot volunteering/helping out in the weeks before a the job became available- interview at the IT place where I worked before that, and got that job too. I'd go barefoot for my next job interview too. It shows my dedication to going barefoot and makes it clear that that is the one thing I will not compromise on; I am not willing to put on footwear for my job, not even flipflops, not even for a minute, so I may as well let them know right away, rather than coming to the interview shod and then having to say 'yeah, I'm wearing shoes now, for the interview, but on all *other* days...'.
It's called "Archeon" and it's in Alphen aan de Rijn, a small town near Leiden in The Netherlands. And yes, it's great fun to spend a day every now and then
sorta off topic.. sorta not but.. the other day i was watching the simpsons and homer was barefoot and pantless and got hired on the spot in a department store.
Yah I second that Don't get me wrong she seems like a cool person. And I like some of her movies but shes an actress and she can definitely get away with a lot more then the average Joe or Jill
Have you tried being bf while traveling on biz? I'm always bf when I travel and I fly over 130k miles per year.
Yeah, actually quite a bit. Weather permitting, the only time I wear closed-toe shoes is when I'm face-to-face with others in a business meeting. Flying and driving, I'm totally barefoot. In the evenings if I go out with co-workers, I usually succumb to flip-flops. In cooler weather, I wear sneakers to fly, drive, etc. I love bare feet, but I hate cold toes!
That's cool. 3 weeks ago, I flew into Missoula, MT where it was -6F. I even went to my rental car bf. All was good until I had to tread thru some snow. Once the snow melted on my feet, they got really cold. Probably not the smartest move on my part, but I can say I did it.
