I tend to wear a large blue woolly cradigan with a pixie hood, but the secret is layers. Wear a long sleeved top with a teeshirt over it and then a jumper and a coat and you'll be snuggly.

yeh, nynysuts is right. Here in England where i am every1 wheres lots of layers in the Autumn ad the winter. the most i have ever worn was a t-shirt on a t-shirt under a jumper under a flease.
In winter i forget the hippie look cause it is just too cold.

In winter I wear longer skirts hehe. I even layer skirts sometimes cos I'm a bit weird like that. I dion't mind cold weather too much though, makes me appreciate warmer weather more. Ah England, love it...

I wear silk under garments. I usually wear leg warmers over the long underwear but under my pants, I layer tops and cardigans, i have made myself very warm and functional scarfs, i wear multiple pairs of socks, waterproof boots, gloves, a hat, and a down coat. :) Problem is when you get inside, you have so many garments on. . .

I don't know what the humidity is like in Vermont, but in dry cold Colorado, I use layers with a really good outer coat.
I know flannel-lined jeans are made, and they might be a grand idea.

I use tights: the exercise type in cotton (basically a T-shirt for the legs) under trousers/ skirts (whichever applies), with a long sleeve T-shirt under a second shirt or sweater (jumper).
Mittens are warmer than gloves because your fingers can share warmth.
Glittens, fingerless gloves with a "cap," rock.

I found mine at a military surplus store.

Add a nice water resistant parka with hood, and a scarf for those days you walk far or in snow as it falls.
I have to have a hat. I made a fleece hat, but they are all over in stores.
In a pinch, a hat, scarf, sweater/ thick hoodie and gloves/mittens can do.
And snow boots. I keep a pair of shoes at work and use snow boots to go anywhere.
We get some traction problems. I love Yak trax. http://www.yaktrax.com/productstraction.aspx

I do have one lighter weight coat for fall/ spring, because the parka is serious winter gear.
Lots of coats and parkas are springing up in the local thrift stores here.
I paid $50 for the one I use, bought in 1998, new, but it was 75 percent off and a friend worked at the store and got me a damage discount for a small stain.
but it is a Mountain Hardwear parka, and I might well be using it on my 50th birthday.

Aside from everyone else's great suggestions, get yourself a couple pairs of thermal long-johns. It'll make a world of difference on those cold, cold days. I also loooooove really high socks to wear under clothes becasue long-johns are a bit bulky, thigh-high length socks own on cold days.

as most people have said allready, layers, lots of layers. dont wear jeans, they wont keep you warm at all & if it gets wet it takes forever to dry so you will feel even colder.

silk, bamboo & cotton are great materials for keeping you warm, i bought some wicked bamboo thurmal base layers the other day that keep me really toasty.

one of the keys to keeping warm is to have a layer of air between your base layer & your upper layer.

as an avid skiier i have had to learn how to keep warm. i had some salopets that were a little too small & tight to the top of my legs. they didnt keep me warm at all because there was no air between my legs & the salopes.

i love chunky knit jumpers with a couple of layers under.

I usually wear leggings (mostly black or any dark color), knee high boots with a heel and tunic or a mini dress. It's not the warmest outfit but if I have my army jacket I stay pretty warm.
