Was in a car crash in January. Blew out my left hip. The hip is healing nicely. I am getting to to the point where I can take a few steps (listing like a drunken sailor) on my own without a cane or crutch. The problem is that either when my hip was dislocated, or when it was repaired, some nerve(s) was damaged. I have pain in my left foot. The pain gets better with activity, but when I finally rest, the more active of a day I have had, the more painful of a night I will have.

When I left the hospital, my operating surgeon wrote a script for 240 mg oxycodone, taken up to 12 a day. Well, there were a lot of them and they lasted me a while. I transitioned from hospital to home to back to school. When they ran out, I went to the school doc, told him what had been going on and asked for refills on my meds (other stuff that I am one was running out at the same time, Cumadin, Lyrica, Celebrex...) Well, I was a sad little puppy when I saw that he had written me a script for 32 5mg oxycodone taken max 4 a day. However, I hadn't really had a ton of pain, I wasn't using the foot at all and the nerve pain wasn't that bad.

I went back in two weeks and we thought that stopping the narcotic pain meds was a good idea. I didn't mind, I hadn't had that much pain, I'd be fine and, "I don't want an addiction." Well, PT increased, my use of the foot increased and the pain increased. So bad that I was crying out at night. I was taking 6 Tylenol PM's, 3200mg Ibuprofen and 2 Ambien to try to sleep through a night and I was failing. The GF came up to visit for Valentine's day weekend and she made it through the first night, but the second night she finally said enough. At 3:30am on Monday I called the emergency number. On Monday morning the doc wrote me a script for 60 20mg oxycodone, twice a day. The prescription was gone by the following Monday. I had gone through a month worth of pills in a week.

Most (some?) was directed at the pain. Another problem was the pills were scripted Oxycontin, because that was all the pharmacy had. I was not used to the time release. I'd have pain, I would take a pill, there would be very little relief an hour later, I would take another pill. I'd be feeling better in an hour, but there would still be pain, so I would take another pill...an hour later I have 60 mg of Oxy in my system and I am on cloud nine for 10 hours when the cycle would repeat.

So I go in today, with my hat in my hands and tell this story to the doc. He says two things, I am not comfortable medicating pain any higher than what I will give you today and if you want to finish the semester, you should get used to the idea of living in pain. He writes me a script for 14 40mg Oxy, twice daily and 7.5/500 Lortab/Vicodin for emergency relief, 4X daily max. This is a week long script...I have to make it last and not be back in there. I also really can't make it through a night in pain. It's bad. When I was in the ER, they asked me my pain. I answered an 8 with a hip dislocated so bad one leg was 3 inches shorter than the other, blood pouring from my knees and a hip socket that would take a steel plate and 12 screws to replace. My pain at night, without anything is a 6 bordering a 7. It's pretty bad.

How can I make these pills last a full week? I've taken 1 40mg and one 7.5. I am really feeling like a second 40 would be nice. Do I do it and then pray I can get through the am without tomorrow? I'd like to avoid the 7.5's for a day or two, simply because I have been pumping a lot of acetaminophen in me lately. What's the best strategy to make your shit last?

    Sorry if tl;dr.

Well after an hour of reading.LOL
I will tell ya one thing. Oxys don't kill the pain. do you expect to be pain free? NOT. The way your taking them is actually hurting you worse. Oxys just make ya not care. LOL but when you take alot it makes you ache more and more.I had back surgery and did what your doing. Then I took less for a couple of days and felt alot better. Then had them for fun when the pain eased up.
So to put it simple. for ya. BUCK UP AND DEAL WITH FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS and you will be surprised how much better you feel.. I'M serious Try it

Thanks for the advice. I will say (as I mentioned in the novella above) the last time I was on nothing more than Lyrica and OTC meds, I was crying out in pain. I did learn that you are correct. It isn't Percocet I have, it's the generic for Lortab...or Vicoden. I will give it a shot. Just seems stupid to have the hard stuff for long-term maintenance and the lighter stuff for emerging pain.

its because you have to much oxy in your system and making it more painfull. Let the oxy clear out some in 2 days you will feel alot better. then take smaller doses of oxy and it will help. I promise man take the vics for 2 days.
I'm going to tell ya, it is going to be painfull till your oxy level comes down, but when it does the pain will go away

If you want to turn your oxycontin ER into the Instant release version all you have to do is take the coating off and crush it, Now it went from ER to IR. But only if they are the name brand pills.

They gave you the OC for around the clock pain and the hydros for breakthrough pain, which really sucks for you.

My father takes OC 80's 2 times a day and roxicodone 30mg 5 times a day for breakthrough pain. They SHOULD have given you roxi's instead of hydro's.

That sucks about your accident... Yeah, I agree that you're taking too much oxycodone. Opiates are a double edged sword with pain. They change our perception of pain, as if to push it to a far corner of the mind, and they also block part of it in the brain and spinal cord. But, on the rebound, they also increase our sensitivity to pain and the higher doses actually cause us to hurt. I'm a lightweight and will feel awful the next day after only 25 to 30mg of oxycodone. In your case, if you take it regularly for the pain, it'll maintain a fairly steady level in your body so the pain doesn't get out of control. They take a few hours to reach their peak serum level, so if you're having pain that's spiking, take the OC as directed and use the hydrocodone, since it'll give you relief faster...and by the time it's wearing off, the OC will have built up enough to keep you somewhat comfortable. You're probably not going to be pain free, but it'll be a hell of a lot better than before! I take small doses of vicodin for my back and find it makes it tolerable, but not pain free.

If you make a deal with yourself to take it only as directed, they'll last. But, if it's too tempting to take more, try giving them to someone you can trust to ration them out. Or... put them someplace really really hard to get to so it's a pain in the ass to grab one whenever! There was another thread like this where it was suggested to put some in baloons and swallow them, then shit out your dose! Haha... But remember the pain and agony you'll feel from running out early if you overuse it now!
