I often wonder about what anarchist societies might look like. In particular, I try to imagine what an anarchist city would look like and how it would function, if that is even possible. It seems to me that in order for freedom and equality and all the other things anarchists hold dear to be allowed to grow and flourish, cities would need to be entirely redesigned. Furthermore, the devastating environmental impact that our present cities have needs to be addressed, raising the question of whether cities can even be allowed to exist in the first place. In my mind, walls and barriers would need to be torn down as private property would cease to exist, asphalt would need to be ripped up to allow the planting, houses and apartments would need to be reorganized to allow for local/concensus based decision making to take place. In addition, most modern cities as we know them are organized in a manner which puts all the "important" commercial businesses and corporations at the center and people on the outside, with public transportation focusing mainly on getting people to and from that city centre. I think this too would have to be reorganized, so as to make people, culture, and life the center of our cities. Anyway, just thought it would make for an interesting sociological study. Any thoughts / ideas?
