First off, there are several types of meditation.

Some, you completely void your mind of thought. Other types, you focus your mind on only a single thought or feeling, etc. depending on your own preferances.

There is also Chakra meditation, which is meant to open Chakras (or points where energy collects in your body), and strengthen physical and mental aspects that coincide with a certain chakra.

I'm not going to sell you a pair of shoes until I know your shoe size.

What do you hope to gain from meditation?

im going to be totally honest with you here, im not sure exactly what i want to gain. i have read it helps to calm and relax you and find inner peace, which all sound very appealing to me. ive also heard it allows you to become more focused, patient and able to concentrate better, which again all of these traits appeal to me. i hope that helped you get a better sense of the kind of foot your dealing with ;)

Oh, it's the usual big foot. By the time they get to me, they're all pretty enlarged. :)

Meditation does nothing more than help you know the self. Its who you REALLY are, underneath all that belief you've attached to your sense of self.

Have no belief, except that anything is possible.

The ride to that realization is...exciting.

Personally, I like to meditate to Chakras, and even if you don't beleive there is such a thing, the music for such meditation surely helps. Just go on YouTube and look up some meditation soundtracks.

Some neat things will start to happen.

Meditation for me is difficult to explain. It used to be like any other person's.
    In segments. Sessions.

Mine now runs all the time, in waking life. Eyes open. REAL open.
But there are two sets of eyes now. The physical eyes that see the physical world. And the heart, which sees everything else. Everything else...is the ocean. This reality is a bubble within it. There's quite a bit more out there. Just beyond that wall. You don't pop the bubble. You just come and go as you please. It has no further power over you.

    That's the simplistic version anyway.

How to meditate. I'll refer you to what I wrote for this young man, a fellow seeker of self.

The third eye has two uses. It is the sensory organ for the spiritual realm, and it is also the door between here and there. The door opens inward. It has no real physical reality. It's nature is extremely rarified.

Your consciousness kind of stands nearby and sees it open and close once and a while. Love and compassion. Composure of music. Poetry. All this high activity causes a breeze as the door opens and closes from these higher realms. Inspiration. Not really spiritual, but of a very refined nature compared to a normal waking state.

When you watch that door all the time, the desire to move through it will intensify. You catch glimpses of truths that have long haunted you for answers.
You'll creep a little closer and finally walk through. See the "kingdom" laid out before you.

All the questions you've ever had evaporate like water in a skillet.

Then you come back to the human world. Slide on your human mask and open your eyes.

Aware that you can't possibly put into words what you just experienced. But you'll feel driven to try. To understand your own nature is to also understand the nature of others. Compassion will show you the difference between the two, and how to bridge it.

Compassion is a byproduct of understanding yourself.

I like your open, friendly attitude. Attitude is number 1 in meditation, not technique. You asked for advice, let me break it down really quick. Meditation means awareness, and there are 2 pure types of meditation: Mantra and mindfulness. Mantra is any point of focus, such as a thought, sound, word, object etc. Mindfulness is the non-judgmental, accepting attitude that allows all the mantras to exist. Mindfulness thus lets you become aware of all that goes on inside the mind you're in, always adapting to everything that goes on around you and within you, real-time, past and future, coming and going.

I like to look at it this way: If you set a goal, it becomes a mantra. If you keep focusing on that goal, it grows, and you easily overlook all the stuff that happens while you pursue your goal. Mindfulness is the animal awareness, natural and powerful, and it lets you experience life and all its diverse mantras moment-by-moment. You see how they connect? My best tip is to read the article below and learn what meditation really is, and there's also some easy-to-do scripts on how to meditate:

    Best wishes,

    Just my experience...a novice

When one gets a glimpse through the forehead at the inner dimension it is proof we are not this body of aches and quenchless sense cravings-but some are fun enough to keep us coming back...

I have been in love with meditation and a seeker of truth. Practicing raja yoga for 16 years-very heavy for 7. But I have digressed after my second back injury in 2002.

I usually practiced mornings and late nights and when I could devote a lengthy bit of time-on the good days I lost track of time.

My sciatic nerves become inflamed when I sit in the posture for too long now. But If I can raise the serpent force above the pain area and block it, blissfully I have a blessing sometime.
I am hoping my karma is a good bit less in my next life. Deep meditation is truly bliss and is a way to lessen one's desires-tranquillity is positive and never the same-it gets better if we give it our complete will.
There are yogis, sufis and mystics that can attain the breathless state and truly become attuned with the blissful spirit-If I could relay how wonderful it can be, my time here would be well spent.
Perfect Samadhi is the goal-union with God/soul/higher self. I have slept "consciously" and seen things in an OBE state.
I have just tasted a minute amount of loving spirit, so sweet, it has left me thirsting for more...maybe I can get there again- someday.

We all will seek, in time, it is our true being-Bliss.

    Shanti

Meditation once understood at its early levels can be progressed through normal day to day activities or work. Some people think meditating is sitting down, some people moving with the flow of yoga, some people mantras etc. etc. I think you'll find that once you reach a certain level you will be able to apply and envelope your consciousness with meditation with nearly everything you do. That being said I still need meditation by sitting down style twice a week and yoga once a week.
    meditation:
"a mental discipline by which one attempts to get beyond the reflexive, "thinking" mind into a deeper state of relaxation or awareness"

Its not so hard to discipline yourself to go beyond thinking into a deeper awareness throughout your daily life, but just don't expect miracles overnight, hehe.

I would say to remember to go BEYOND thinking and not below it. Many times this is the hardest task for me. It is easy to go from a deep state of relaxation, thinking you may have achieved it, but then once you think you degrade and when you degrade you go below thinking. If that makes sense, its getting late.

Choose a tranquil location - one free from distractions.
    2
Decide whether you'd like to have meditation music in the background.
    3
Select a comfortable chair or place to sit, and assume a sitting position with your spine relatively straight.
    4
    Close your eyes.
    5
Breathe in, allowing your rib cage and belly to expand as you inhale.
    6
    Exhale slowly.
    7
Concentrate on your breathing. Be aware of each breath and the feelings of deeper relaxation.
    8
Allow thoughts and feelings to enter your mind. Acknowledge them, allow them to pass, and refocus on your breathing.
    9
Open your eyes after you feel more relaxed and centered.
