I'm going to be growing a few San Pedro. This will be my first time growing a cactus. I'm wondering, I read about two different soil mixtures, which one would be better? 3 parts coarse sand, 1 part loam and 1 part leaf mold(bake it 400% for an hour to kill all the bad stuff) or 3 parts high pumice soil mix (much more pumice than in Hyponex cactus potting soil) and mix in one part forest compost. All wisdom on growing this cactus would be highly appreciated. I hope I can get through this with at least half success. I'm going to get a big wide rimmed clay pot for the porous-ness and drainage ability clay pots have. I'm not sure exactly how to go about watering them as seedlings and baby cactii. I have this to go by... http://www.erowid.org/plants/cacti/cacti_cultivation1.shtml I feel that would be sufficient, but I'm not going to have them in seeding trays, I read it's not good to re-pot them, so I'm going to plant each one in it's own large clay pot. Every two months I'm going to mix some Hoagland A-Z trace mineral concentrate in with the watering to give it it's required minerals. So I need to know if all this is adequate and which soil mixture I should use. The second thing I really don't know how to do is feeding it. How do I go about giving it morefertilizer or whatever. Do I scrape out old soil and replace it with fresher soil? Thankyou thankyou to whoever is kind enough to help me on my journey!!
I used some dirt I dug up in my yard mixed with a little bit of sand... It's worked fine so far. They aren't exactly high maintnence, I'm pretty sure that you could use either of those two soil mixes with great success.
