Actually, I own that movie. It's really interesting and amazing how he did that all himself. I found it particularly interesting how he made the lock on the door.....ingenious!
That and the door hinges, amazing stuff! He could damn near make a transmission out of wood, lol. And to be able to be content and comfortable in that element throughout the year, it's little wonder he stayed out there for over 30 years. We got a little chuckle out of the part where he talked about how fickle the weather was "...kinda like a woman." Not to be sexist, but it might explain one of the reasons behind his decision to move out there (though I'm sure plenty of women do the same). My wife had planned to move to Alaska 'till she found out she'd have a child to contend with. I'm sure lotsa people go for it with varying degrees of self sufficiency and success, just not everyone documents it. Indeed we've got one in our midst, I'm surprised no one's made more out of cookiecache's post (or maybe they have, just not publicly), seems like an awesome opportunity for those adventurous souls less entrenched in family and work than myself to check it out, experience it for themselves, if even for a limited time.
Yeah ol' Proenneke sure put in the work... But I'm pretty sure this isn't the kind of "off the grid living" Supertramp had in mind. ZW eace:
while i've listened t the pros and cons of living in the alaskan wilds maybe a person should plan a few days visit there in the winter time .........i work in the woods all winter in northern canada ...hearing about and reading about living in -50 temperatures takes on a whole new meaning when you experience it ..wish you guys well in your ventures but try sleeping outside in a tent in the winter before and away from people before you venture out
Winter camping is the best! No bugs to worry about! that means less gear to carry and that means more distance you can travel!
Winter hiking and camping IS great. And extra layer and a warmer bag, but everything else is the same.
I'm comfortable camping out down to about -15 in my mountaineering tent with my cold weather bag. -50 is a whole different ballgame!
Yeah -50F even with a double wall tent, a -25 bag and two layers is not my idea of a good time. But we don't see that much on this side of Boston...
You can get that in the high peaks of New England in the winter, a buddy of mine ended up getting snowed in by a storm on Mount Lafayette, three guys forced to weather it out in a mountaineering tent over night in -65. He carries a bottle with a skull and crossbones on it for such occasions when going outside the tent is not an option. I think he ended up on the receiving end of plentiful beers and herb for bestowing on his friends the privilege of using the pee bottle, lol! Don't sign me up for that shit!
This simple statement sums up everything, quite perfectly. Thanks for sharing it, Zombie. Guys, open your eyes... especially your 3rd eye. Abandon what you instinctively know as pure and utter bullshit. Refuse to play its games... and simply walk away. Something wonderful is awaiting on the other side.
