Hello there one and all, just thought I would start a thread about my newest hobby.... downhill mountain biking :), I've aquired my mates old bike, some proper downhill trials thing, apparently its quite expensive, so im very grateful. Hes also teaching me the way of the mountain biker.... So my question is this....

Anyone into bikes of the mountain kind?

    discuss...:)

Man I love bikin', only done mountain bikin' like twice tho, not many mountains near Central Indiana sadly :( But last year I did my first and hopefully soon to be annual around the midwest biking trip, I took off with my backpack of clothes, food, an' such, an' biked all around the neighbor states of Indiana for almost half the year. It was quite interestin' seein' all the different life styles an' what not.

ever try goin down a mountain on a unicycle?
i aalso do lil kamikazi style in my wheelchair..lol tear the damn thing to peices
the front wheels crush or break off too damn easy..then your stuck for 3 weeks hoobling around on 3 wheels

i really tear thast thing to shreds everytime im in the mountainbs
luckily never broke both front wheels off at once..that would suck to haftea keep it in a wheelie for 3 weeks straight.

but if u like crazy offroad vehicles http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=6375360
check out this vid, at right about 14 minutes into it
this guiy lives in this thing has a hasmoc in it, and travels all around the country, just hop/skipping along
its perfectly ballanced so u just swing your wieght and bounce.. every hop u go 10 feet off the ground and like 20 feet forward
it handles all rerain but on the highway he can get up some really good speed
    fun as hell too

My husband is itching to do more mountain biking and downhill. Hopefully when we move to Colorado this summer we will have an oppurtunity. However, after watching Scarred on MTV2 I highly reccommend the full face helmet protection after seeing some of those nasty spills and resultant surgeries!

Soaring Eagle, I have to say I was cracking up at a cartoon vision of some dreadlocked guy in a wheelchair flying down a mountain having the time of his life! Totally sweet you don't let being disabled stop you. Be careful though.;)

hahahas at 1 of the woodstock reunions in the ..hmm 80's or 90's maybe it was 90-91 i forget
thery closed off the originasl site, had big bulldozers blocking the entrence and guys with shotguns. they made us hike round to the other entrence, 8 miles of montain roads
id catch a bumper hitch on a stationwagon with like 25 ppl in and covering every inch od the outside of it up the hills, then fly down the next hill tryinbg to drum and steer at the same time (fingers wiould be smokeng)
we get to the other enterence, and they say they will only let 20 go down at a time for 20 minutes then 20 more
bhut when the 1st 20 went down, me and biyt 15 others took off through the woods, down a cliff across a ravine and over 8 sets of barbed wire.
when the cop down on the site saw me comming over the last set of barbed wire we see him get on his radio..abnd 20 seconds later tghey let everyone in..had my picture in the paper liberating the site too..lol
but on the way back was flying down 1 of the steeper hills, being clockedat between 50-60 (and my hands aree my only brakes..ouch they were smoking) i hit this pothole somehow manage to keep it under controll ebven though i was on 1 wheel and the axle snapped in 1/2 (almost luckily cause when it came back down the snapped axel caused the wheels to push in against the frame and skid to sa halt)

ive crashed many times goin lil roo outtaa control, but never been hurt (except when i smashed the glass bead in a dread against the curb smashing it into my eyebrow
but usualy im at the very edge of controll.. barely hanging on for dear life
its a delicate ballance bettwweern losuing contrioll cfompletely and burning all the skin off my hands
just glad im so good at crashing withioyut being hurt

but ppl's reactions are hilarios when u ask em to retreive your wheelchair thats gone over a cliff or rolled down the montiam..they always pannic while im laughing histerricly

my partner is really into it. He rides a single speed. He's not that into downhill'ing. He enjoys the challenge of riding uphill more. He keeps trying to get me out onto the trails with him....one of these days. Im just scared of flying off a cliff!

im trying to be less crazy lately..i mean i dont go down stairs in a wheelie anymore and offroad try to take it lil more easy cause it sux being hundresds of miles from anywhere that could fix the chair and have it broken for weeks
but sometimes its hard to avoid
all the roots and rocks and shit just tear things up (my shoulders includeed..lol just ask chevy (dylanchick0113) she had to give me like 20-30 shoulder rubs a day to deal wityh the terain in coloradfdo (and that stuburn girl wouldnt let me rub her acghing feet when they hurt to bad to really walk..)

really tho the altitudes usualy more exhausting then the terain..
glad i quite smoking this year..lol
the air will probly be thin again in new mexico

I use to be hooked on downhill a year or 2 ago. Ripping it down some of our local tracks, but times have changed. My calling is for the surfing, I think its better for my dread babies aswell. They muchly enjoy salt over dirt

I enjoy riding a bike, though I haven't tried rolling off of steep cliffs or dangerous terrain. Perhaps if the opportunity presents itself I will take the bait ^_~

Also, shouldn't this whole thing belong in the "lets talk about..." thread? I thought the whole idea was to eliminate these random, not dread related topics?

    lol cunning phil :p And yay Old-Growth! I can't ride a bike either :D

My neighbour who is in a wheelchair is quite sporty still. He's in some kind of major downhill fast-going team (can't remember the sport) and he's also got some kind of crazy bike thing in our basement that he works with his arms, and a giant ski that he sits in with two special arm skis either side. All looks a bit mad!

Looks like the mods are pretty lax on keeping discussion in their designated forums. Guess it's fitting for a "hippie" message board.;)
