I miss carrying beer cases to and fro in outdoor shows, mang. That was fun! I've always liked physical labor the best. If only it paid. :(

The only thing I find more rewarding than physical labor is teaching.

Working with your hands and body gives you a solid feeling of having done a good day's work. And here, it does pay quite well.

Definitely. It's a shame we got a fake economy going on, otherwise I'd be a longshoreman for sure. Manual labor is my passion. :cheers2:

You're more switched on than I thought.

Teaching is my passion, but I enjoy manual work and I think everyone would be better off for having dabbled in a bit of it, at least for a while.

The best job I ever had was when I worked at a daycare.. I worked there two years, it was a great two years...We played games, did art, told stories, those kids were great and I miss them and they did teach me a lot of things about myself as silly as that sounds, but won't go into...
Sitting in a cubicle makes my mind crack like an egg...Want to be an elementary art teacher, but you need a "degree" which I don't have...

That whole degree business is just silly, isn't it?
That's why I teach diving and fitness. As long as you pay for it, you're pretty much guaranteed a certification no matter how useless you are! Modern day education is wonderful.

You can also teach English in foreign countries without a degree or even a certification. That was hands down one of the most rewarding experiences I had, and I learned lots about myself as well as a fair bit of the local language.

That's what is really stopping me from it, is the degree.. I mean that sounds really stupid and pretty much a cop-out because if it is something you really want then nothing will prohibit from doing what it takes, but right now school is out of the question because of various reasons... But again, if I did want it as bad as I say I did, I would do it no matter what.. So I guess it is really me stopping myself, not the needing the degree, but me, myself...
I think having to have a degree to teach little kids basic art is pretty pointless (in my opinion it is..) Sure they should have you get a certificate perhaps, but to have all this schooling, again pretty pointless.. So I even looked up being a preschool teacher, again must have a degree, same with kindergarten.. I just don't understand, can't they have just a program you attend and go through, instead of all this schooling..

I bet that was really a great experience teaching English in foreign countries.. Do you prefer teaching diving and fitness or English, or are they both great in their own ways and you enjoy both equally..? Is there anything else you would want to teach...?

Great in their own ways. Diving is a lot of fun, but you only get that feeling of accomplishment when you have awful students who finally get it. Fitness and English are both rewarding in their own ways. When people commit to their training and you see the results, it's awesome. People change their lives, truly. But there are a lot of hassles with being a trainer.

Teaching kids is certainly the most rewarding, but can also be the most frustrating, and they can be quite rough on you. With diving or training I command a lot of authority, with English I'm just another teacher. But when you try to get them to understand something for a while, and they finally get it.. wow.

If you really wanted to teach, you could easily teach English in a bunch of countries with no certification or anything. In Korea and Japan they'd even pay you. (Whereas in some other places they might only give you food and lodging)

I know what you mean about the degree. They want you to study for years to train little kids simple things that most people with passion could, I would argue, quite easily teach, but they're not going to give you any incentive in the way of wages, and yet they complain about lacking teachers. A test of ability and a preparation program would be sufficient, I think.

If you haven't already, you've got to read 'Island' by Aldous Huxley. It was his last novel, about a utopian society on a remote Pacific island. What you just said sounds like a quote from one of the characters. Check it out.
