Not long ago the following web page crossed my way - and I immediately fell in love with it: http://crooked5280.blogspot.com/2009/02/unschooling-manifesto.html Imagine a world where children would be free to live. Free to find their own truths. Free to follow their real interests. Free to develop into the great individuals we would all be if we had had the chance to. What could be greater?
yep... i unschooled my little one for the first half of kindergarten... might do it again. there is a whole section here on HF just for homeschooling. http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/forumdisplay.php?f=242
Most kids must be schooled in order to give them some sort of structure. School teaches responsibility.
I'm all for learning by doing and in accordance with individual interest. That is the old system of apprenticeship, as opposed to the system of pre-qualifications (degrees, resumes, prior experience) we have now, which is a guarantor of inequality and mediocrity.
I homeschool and we're very flexible, but I have some structure too. I personally don't resonate with the entirety of the unschooling principle.. but adopt some aspects of it I guess. We spend very little time homeschooling, compared to what they do in public school, and she's probably 2 grade levels ahead of kids her age. I wouldn't feel right if she were behind.
Exactly. I think there's wisdom in balance and structure is an important element of life and should not be ignored or avoided. I think one of the benefits of homeschooling is that I can use structure in a way that is helpful but doesn't overshadow the natural inclination of her mind and interests.
No, school brainwashes kids and robs them of their individuality. It teaches them what to think. Not how to think for themselves. That's why the US is a nation of mindbombed zombies that can only parrot what the "experts" on TV tell them. I think unschooling and homeschooling are much, much better than anything the public schools (prisons) could ever offer.
Matt. Most people are meant to be brainwashed sheep, that's how the system works. Obviously, intelligent individuals can go way beyond what they learned in school... while others can't. It's a pretty good way of separating the few strong from the hordes of weak. But I do agree, what you get here in America isn't really education.
Most people are meant to be brainwashed sheep? According to who? The system is the problem. It is not designed to benefit the average person. Maybe people will finally begin realizing this as they're getting shafted and sold up the river.
Most people are too damn dumb to be anything beyond brainwashed sheep. They would simply be sheep if they weren't brainwashed, and then they'd bite alot.
I disagree that the system is the problem. I mean, sure it is A problem but not THE problem. The main problem is the people themselves, because most people choose to be brainwashed and led like sheep, and they don't want to think for themselves and exercise their independence. The system is only a reflection of the current state of consciuosness. Options exist right now for people to follow a different course, but how many are doing it? And you better believe it, that when the system no longer reflects the will of the people it WILL change because the people will make it so, one way or another. No free spirit will be enslaved for long.
I have intentions of unschooling my children bur we'll just see where that goes when I actually have kids. It really, though, depends on a lot of factors, the number one being the public schools available in the area. If we're still in this area, my kids won't be setting foot in a public school because god...the systems here are terrible. Fuuuck that.
