    hello my name is Derek.

ive had dreads before using the natural method/twist and rip.(i let the base of the dreads for on there own and then just twist and ripped the rest)

i cut most of them off about 2 years ago because i kept them extremely dirty and managed to make all of our pillow cases and sheets waterproof, with a dark tint to them. after quite a few angry looks and threats to cut them in my sleep from my wife i decided to cut them, a decision i instantly regretted.

so sence then i have been growing my hair out to have them again, well all was going good till the other day i got impatient and asked a friend of mine to backcomb my hair for me. now some might like this method and people have told me they look good but it just doesn't feel right, it feels to forced and not comfortable like before.

so with that said i am combing out my "dreads" today and starting a new, and im going to track the progress of my natural dreads as they begin agian

    pictures coming soon

just wondered did you not like washing your dreads then? is that why they were so dirty ?
I feel so sorry for you making the 'instant decision' to cut them though.I bet you felt worse the morning after when you looked in the mirror!! OMG id hate it.
Sorry if its bringing back bad memories :(

I don't think the theory was "only clean hair will dread" but "clean hair dreads faster than dirty hair."

    i totaly feel ya
i sure couldnt imagine ever backcombing or anything it just wouldnt feel right at all

i think thats what aloytta these ppl dont understand..they jump right in to backcombing never even trying natural then act like its the best way to go in all cases..
but if they ever went natural then tried any other method theyd feel just like you did, like it was totaly wrong.

cant wait to see the new dreads

not meaning to derail or whatever.. but thats how most of us backcombers think about you and natural..

youve not tried backcombing (like we havent tried natural)
and you act like natural is best (like some backcombers do)..

im twisting your words.. see my point?

dont wanna start a argument again,,

    =]

i feel like i might regret posting this, but im ganna do it anyway.

It's the same with all sorts of things... the method we chose is the one we're most familiar with and know for certain the outcome of, even when we know other ways may have better outcomes, our own is always the saftey net. Like always going to the same restaurant and choosing the same item on the menu :p

I backcombed and left them. They unravelled and are now dreading "naturally", so does that make mine "totally wrong"? Does it make them somehow artificial, or fake, or "wolf locks" as I heard backcombed dreads once referred to (not a compliment I can assure you)?

I didn't want to go "natural" because, like many, i didn't believe I had the sort of hair that would dread at the drop of a hat. It seems to have dreaded quickly once lightly backcombed together, but that's no measure of how quickly it would have come together by itself had it been left. The natural process, from what I've heard, can take years, and quite simply I didn't want to look like I have a rat's nest on my head (as I do now after 3 months of dreading) for any longer than I have to.

Frankly, right now my hair looks a fuckin mess and I'm a gnat's arse-hair away from cutting them off - I start with a new client at work on Monday so right now i am really really disillusioned. The thought of going through 2-3 years of looking like I just crawled out of a hedge is the absolute last thing I would be considering right now given the chance to start dreads over.

there have been plenty who have tried 1 way then another, like this poster asnd of those who have tried multiple methods its pretty much always agreed that natural just feels right, except in the rare cases when natural just doesnt get resulots for 1 reason or another (greasiness or unconceisly detangling while washing or in sleep..or the hairs just too short)
but pretty much ewhen ppl have had natural dreaded even if theyd tried other routes oncde theyd gone natural just nothing else would ever feel right again.

in fact im guessing this poster almost felt like it was a traumartic experience that didnt leave him feeling good about having his dreads back that he missed so much instead made him feel bad about what hed done..on the other hand now that hes going natural again, the very 1st knot he finds will make him feel great

if you never let go and let things happen on theyre own ya never will understand how wonderful the process is
u get a hint if u backcomb once then do nothing, u still get alittle of the freedom u experience from neglect, but its not even close to what uget from just allowing dreads to dread from day 1
