You know, it's possible to be both. The Nazerenes and Ebionites who made up the first century Christian community in Jerusalem, considered themselves to be both. They were Jewish by birth and followed Jewish law, including circumcision (although the Ebionites were vegetarian & didn't believe in animal sacrifice). They regarded Jesus as the Jewish Messiah. Unlike the Nazarenes, the Ebionites rejected the virgin birth and considered Jesus to be God's adopted Son rather than being divine. The man both groups looked to as their leader, after Jesus' departure, was Jesus' brother, James. They regarded Paul as a heretic and traitor, and Paul's followers had the same opinion of them. Paul's group eventually won.
Thanx, I’ve always done what was interesting to me but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s interesting to others. I hopped a freight train from Seattle to Minneapolis, I don’t know is that interesting? It was to me. I didn’t figure you were insulting me and I don't have a problem with anyone, even with those who do insult me, except for the fact insults tend to slow down the conversation. The only problem I have is trying to keep what IndyHippy asked for, down to short of a novel, because none of my life stories are short ones. Like when asked how many brothers and sisters I have, I used to say I have three brothers and two sisters but my brothers only have one sister but now, with my brothers and sisters being dead, what should I say? When it comes to spirituality, I can’t just say; I was raised a Christian and here I am, tah-dah! As I said my life path has taken me though both Eastern and Western Religions and I even had a period were I developed my own religion, what was I thinking? But if you’d like a copy of what I come up with, I’m cool with that.
its not like there was a whole lot of religion back in his day.. the common one in his area was and of his family was jewish...
Sure! My life is pretty much an open book, although it is interesting to me, I just didn't think it would be all that interesting to others. I guess I'm going to have to get started, I'm a real good procrastinator!
As I have mentioned before although Jesus was definitely a Jew by ancestry, by the time he was born, the Jewish religion of his day no longer resembled the true worship that God had established and so Jesus would have worshiped according to true worship and not according to the Jewish traditions of his day.
Lets see, some common place religions that were around at the time of Jesus in his area were, Ancient Greek, Judaism, the Essenes, the samaritans (both the Essenes and the Samaritans were actually seperate religions from the Jews) the worship of Baal was still fairly common then, Mysticism (You could call this a religion, today the closest one to it would probly be Wicca) and several other lesser knowns.
And then within Judaism (which I demonstrated didn't specifically mean "Jewish Religion") there were sects. Pharisees were strict Literalists who took Torah observance to the extreme. They weren't "bad people" as lots of christians think, they were just a stumbling block to people's faith. The Sadducees were also a group roaming around who denied the ressurection of the body. I'd argue that the Essenes were of a Jewish Religious sect, saying they are not is like saying Protestants are not Christians because they deny the validity of the Papacy. The Samaratains I'd argue are not a separate religion, but a separate "ethnic" group with a different religious tradition. If we expand the definition of Judaean Religion, I thik the Samaritain religion could even fit (they use some of the same texts, just like Christian groups which were considered sects).
I am a mystic , we study all religions.. it has been established that he was raised a jew why do people have a prob with this, its a wonderful religion.. they learn to treat people based on circumstance , not crime.. wonderful religion.. but being a mystic myself.. " To Each His Own".....
It has not been established that Jesus was raised Jewish. No one knows how he was raised, as a matter of fact the Essene religious movement was far more prominent where he came from, as such he could easily have been raised that way.
I think they were basing it more on Mary's background than Jesus.. What diff. does it make anyway?? Its all good...
Well you asked so I figured I'd give you some history I enjoy history myself, and its always interesting to speculate.
Naw, I was gettin in on a convo.. theres not alot on here tonight.. I agree, religion is a most fascinating subject..
What do you think of this world in which we live, veiled1? (sorry, I probably shouldn't derail this subject that has been talked on and on and on about. )
Quite honestly, I have read and heard discussed this - that Jesus was reared in the Essenes way. I just always thought they were a part of the overall Judaism faith. Are they Not? If not, how are they different?
