It's been a while! Had lots on. I cut my dreads! After umming and arring over whether i should, i did it! Purely because the backcombed dreads were thick packed up hair and the natural dreads growing were a lot thinner. So to have a fresh start i cut them upto the point of where they were originally backcombed so what you see in the picture are the dreads that formed naturally after having my existing hair backcombed into dreads August 2007. :D

My only upset now is that i've never liked having short hair and i'm missing my hair before dreads but i'm putting this down to suddenly having short hair for the first time in 13 years. This forum always makes me feel a lot better about my dread journey.

Here's a pic, excuse the stern page

    wow.
so, do u have a before and after pic for comparison?

how long were they, how long did u have them.
you'll feel better soon, ya just gotta get used to it, let things settle in.
they'll be long again sooner or later.
    and nice and natursal.

ya know, thats something i never even concidered bout backcombing..that the backcombed and natural growth could be so drasticly different.

sorry to see u have to cut over that.

if u had to start over from srraight hair would u go natural next time or backcomb thinner?

    Hey
I would definately go the natural way if i was to start again. I have a friend who's done it and his hair was poker straight and his dreads look ace with minimal length loss. I am happy because i know myself mine are all natural although a lot said you couldn't tell i have extensions etc i knew and i definately think they look different when backcombed although i could only really see on myself. I'm not too bummed out because i know how fast my dreads have grown so far :)

Image of them before is below and sorry for the late reply, busy weekend.

Good luck!! I bet it is the short hair and the fact that your dreads were so darn long before. Keep us posted on your journey... Do you have any close up pics of it now and what its doing?

How did you cut them? Are they unraveling where you cut?
I ask because my hubby's dreads are getting so long, he may want to trim them a bit.

imcan see what u mean between the backcomvbed and natural
its a veey distinct difference but maybe nit everyone would notice
but it for sure lookas puffy and sausage like
the colored section below the puffy backcombed sections aere extentions?

i wouldnt say it looked bad, ya look great with long dreads (and short) but it does look oddf and i can see why if ya werent happy yad wannas cut em

bcmomma ive only known 1 guy to ever trim his..many years ago but he was african american so odviosly less likely to unravel
but ive lost the ends off quire a few from being stepped on
and they do have an inch or 2 loose ate the ends now, but that might have been from fraying through not unraveling..hard to tell

if he trims and they dont stay blunt then they'll only get whispy ends under a couple inches
    typicaly 3 max

A friend of mine trimmed his once, he has had his set for 7 years. Although I did not ask him what he did with the ends, they were all blunted tips.
