Yeah i remember thinking it was quite brilliant. The two things that really stick out were, the monologue you've got below your post there, and also the strangely beautiful footage he shot of the plastic bag floating up in the wind.
Why does a mostly interesting and engaging movie have to end with somebody getting their brains blown out? This was a complete ripoff ending. Are we this sick that this is considered enlightening entertainment?
I loved American Beauty!!! But I agree in a way about the shooting. It was sad but also could have gone in a better direction IMO.
the shooting was actually satisfying to me. The military dad shoots him because he doesn't want people to know he's gay. I can see that happening in real life...sadly.
Yeah, the last monologue you have as your sig was incredible, really got to me. I think I should watch it again.
Yeah, it's on TNT right now. I just posted a thread about it too. It's at the very end right now. Made me want to get high and look for the beauty in the world. My favorite thing about this movie is how he gets his freedom back. It's never too late. End movie...
So they wife was planning on killing her husband? Cause that tape she was listing to in the car I refuse to be a victim. And the neighbor was gay so that's why he kills leister?
I watched it for the first time a few days ago... I am in love with this film. It is amazing, really taps into what people over look. Plus there was stuff in there that mirrored parts of my life in an almost scarily accurate way. Blessings xxx
I thought it was because the neighbor tried to kiss him in the garage earlier and he realized he wasn't gay so he killed him so no one would find out. He was ashaed of people finding out enough to kill him...or thats what I thought.
their is a thought too, I think he was gay and he did not want anyone to know that so he killed him. or something
99% of it is truly outstanding. The 1% is for how his daughter didn't freak out seeing her dead father in the kitchen. Even Annette Benning's cold calculating bitch character acted in immeasurable regret and Thora Birch's character was nowhere near as ruthless as her mother.
I think he kills him not just because of him not wanting anyone to know he's gay, but also because he thinks that he was having a gay relationship with his son and Lester chose his son over him.
I have to say there is one dodgy part though, for a movie as intelligent as this, it was a bit of a cop out to have that scene where the neighbour looks in and thinks he sees his son giving Kevin Spacey a blowjob, that was like something out of an austin powers or naked gun movie, there could've been a more intelligent way for them to do it. otherwise though, a very touching movie.
i saw it when i was in 7th grade and it freaked me out but now i'm sure if i saw it now, i would feel differently about it
I felt that overall it was a great movie. Does anyone know if it is based on a book? Or if there is a book related to it? I'm sure that would be a great read. The cinematography in the movie was pretty good. Nothing to ridiculously amazing if I recAll correctly. Haven't seen this film in a while and the first and only time I watched it I was coming down from popping a good amount of vicodin the evening before (a friend and I decided to watch it at about 3am after taking our vicodin doses at around 12.30) so I'm a little sketchy on the details of the film. I think I'll pop out to my local video store and rent it. Peace
