http://www.sun-sentinel.com/communi...le/sfl-flbhomework0219sbfeb19,0,5805379.story my daughter went to full day kindergarten, and for the whole scool the day is from 8:00 to 3:30. then she'd come home every day and be BURIED under homework. she'd never get to play. i'd try giving her breaks, changing from language arts to math, work on her art, etc. this doesn't even take into account that being on the gymnastics team, she's in practice from 4-7pm on tuesdays and thursdays. now, i know she's in a bit of an elite program, and as such i'm perfectly content for her to have a bit more work than the average kid. that's fine. but don't overload the kids with homework on the weekends and shit. i refuse to make her do it. i'm perfectly okay with her getting a few b's instead of a's if it means my daughter gets to play outside and with her friends once in a while. but i've noticed in the past few weeks since an article in parenting came out about how too much homework doesn't actually help kids at all that kai's homework load is much lighter and far more clever.
how old is your daughter ??? My friends granddaughter is in grade 8 and gets 3 hrs of homework a night
she's in the first grade. 3 hours of homework a night is bullshit. i'd fight back. it's not really helping our kids at all.
no its not. In SK my my friends lil girl had to write a 1 pg essay on the president of the united states. WTF??? That shows me whats so different from my generation . I hardly had any homework. I played blocks and counted and had recess i think thats crazy. Attention span of a 1st grader is not quite all there. I'd be making a parent committee and making a point that this has to stop. Work can be done in class; But i'm sure you cooking cleaning laundry etc is part of learning too. My lil nephews one was in SK and the other was in grade 1 cleaned like crazy!! under the couch swept did laundry dishes fed the cat etc. Its all learning... But it most certainly does not have to be in the books
look up the article in parenting magazine, you should be able to find loads of online links to it. no first grader should be so loaded down with homework that they cry. ten minutes a night is sufficient, especially when you add in the twenty minutes a day reading she has to do.
right. i understand i wrk with underprivledged kids with developmental problems and the load they come home with is just so much. It should be spaced out
That is exactly why Arianna's school does NOT give homework. We do stuff here to help her to remember the vocab and stuff.....but her school has a no homework policy All the way to fifth grade. I was worried about the transition to traditional school...but Sylvi has done beautifully.
my homework load averages about 3 hours a night. but, i don't do it anyways. maybe sometimes i'll do it half assed before homeroom or in study hall
hopefully they will follow thru w/ the guidelines for 09/10. As for children with specialized work loads because of disabilities hopefully they will take more into consideration. Of course there will be some srt f h/w but good lord!! The amount you were telling me sounded like the amount i get at the college level. Hopefully everything works out for you and your daughter Take care Ter
You're like 3 in kindergarten, right? who the fuck gives a 3-5 yearold that much work? I never went to kindergarten, but I thought it was mostly about social development and basic learning skills.
Giving young kids so much homework is horrible. I remember playing in the sandbox, planting a garden, making snacks, doing fun projects, etc. in kindergarten. I only remember one homework assignment, and it was a project that we had plenty of time to complete, not just in ONE night. This gave me plenty of time to read, play, do crafts, help mommy, etc. Normal kid stuff! It wasn't until 3rd grade that I started getting homework, and not until junior high when I started having hours a night. I feel so bad for these kids nowadays. Do most public schools still have recess, or is that a thing of the past too? (Thank God for good moms who care about their child's REAL well-being rather than a stupid letter/number on a piece of paper!!)
kindergarten starts at about 5 years old. it's still too young. kai's workload has decreased quite a bit, thankfully. and none of the scores are going down. kids need to play.
kids need to play. I still can't get used to walking around neighborhoods and NOT seeing them full of children playing outside. When I was little, we were outside practically from dawn to dusk in the summertime ... climbing trees, playing sports, getting dirty. If we had stayed inside, my mother would be worried thinking we were sick. I know it's a different world now, and you have to be on guard every minute for your kids, but children should be outside in the sunshine, laughing and playing without a care in the world. That's their job.
I find it odd that people have so much homework. I'm in second semester of 12th grade, and I never have homework. I go to an average public school, but still... I literally can't remember having a homework assignment that took more than half an hour, and those are rare. This obviously doesn't include larger assignments, but those are given weeks in advance. I truly feel sorry for people with massive homework loads, but this certainly hasn't been the case for me.
