Is it true that smoking while on benzos can reduce the effects of benzos, or even terminate the high?

I am on 25 mgs of valium right now and I have been smoking a couple cigarettes (I have a bad habit of chainsmoking when I take pills).

I don't really notice any difference in the effects than when I take benzos and I don't smoke (usually if I'm staying somewhere where I can't smoke in the house and its too cold to go outside to smoke). So, is it because I am a smoker that I don't notice the effects dropping, or am I having a placebo effect and the effects are actually dropping but in my head, I still feel the same buzz?

If it is placebo, it dont bother me any, because I still feel good.

Was just wondering if smoking on benzos actually decreases the effects or if its just a rumor?

Doubtful that whatever minimal effect would be noticeable.

I explained this in another thread, but its old so I'll explain it again.

YES, smoking tobacco can reduce the effect of benzos, but it has NOTHING to do with smoking a single ciggarette while on the benzos, it's whether you are a smoker or not, period.

Cigarettes center your energy. If you are tired and smoke a cig, it will wake you up a little. If you are hyper or stressed out and smoke a cig, it will calm you down a little. That's part of why they are so mentally addicting; they allow you to rebalance your energy at any point.

With that in mind, note that benzos unbalance your energy. They sedate you, sometimes quite markedly. So if you are quite sedated on benzos, and smoke cigs, it's the same as being quite sedate on booze and smoking cigs. It will slightly 'sober you up'.

my advice is stop doing benzos and quit smoking ;)

as kil0 points out, its about whether you're a smoker or not.
its about changes in brain chemistry, so whilst there's nicotine in your system (it takes 24 hours after a cigarette to pass all nicotine out) benzo effect is not REDUCED, but merely IMPAIRED.

I havent read your other thread, but I have personal experiance with this.

I am a non-smoker. I only smoke when Im fucked up AND around friends that smoke. WHen that does happen, it doesnt matter what drug Im on, I get an immidiate head rush and whatever drug Im on intensifies in feeling. If im drinking, I feel drunker. If im smoking weed, I feel more stoned. If im on uppers, I feel more euphoric and energized. If im doing opiates, it gets me mellower.

Dunno if that experiance agrees with what you explained, but its certainly an effect nicotine has on me. Im not a smoker, but if a high isnt quite kickin in, nicotine goes a long way to making me feel whatever im on, more intensely.

If you are really f-d-up on benzos a good drag will keep you from passing out. In that regard cigs and high dosage of benzos go good together. Just don't smoke if your down to your last few pills, it will lessen their effects.

With short duration benzos like diazepam you will definatley notice the change, as where with longer lasting ones like bromazepam or clonazepam you won't that much but I still feel it personally. This is most definatlely true!
