Hello people, i just want your opinion about an issue that is bothering me, my gf, she is into vegeterian meals, she 's got like 4 months on that, wnat i am seeing is that she is having a dry skin, pale face all the time. She went to the dermatologist and they lady told her to eat proteins, animal proteins, but she dont want to eat them because she dont wnat to eat "dead animal" like she said. My question is, I know that the're a lot of veggie diets full of non animal proteins, but she is really blinded by the veggie idea, no meat at all, why is she getting a skin soo dry?, she does a lot of sport, I am worried for her, can anyone tell me your impressions?. I dont like going to a restaurant with her and the order is a salad for her, nothing else, that is not right, or all of you are like that?, I dont mean to offend anyone, its just a question, here is not that common to find vegetarians restaurants. By the way, you can see that I am not a veggie, she is my first gf who is into that.
I'm not sure what would be causing her skin to be dry and pale like that. I've been a veggie for over 20 years and my skin is oily. There are plenty of proteins that don't come from animals....all types of beans, soy products, nuts...its very easy to eat enough protein in a healthy vegetarian diet. As for what types of choices she has at a restaurant it depends on the type of places your taking her. If your going to a steak house than yes, chances are all she can have is a salad. Most coffeeshop type places now offer veggie burger options. Things can be ordered without the meat lots of times as well. Asian and indian places usually have a lot more veggie options.
agree with LilaBlue. (also a veggie for 20some years) about 15 years ago, i had a mean case of iron deficiency and pale skin is one of the symptoms. i'd recommend an extensive blood test covering everything. it's very treatable and i've never had another "outbreak" again. just have to make sure i eat enough iron rich foods regularly and pop an iron supplement every now and then. if she's athletic/active, she's hopefully drinking the minimum amount of water required. from http://www.naturodoc.com/library/nutrition/water.htm: "At the International Sports Medicine Institute, we have a formula for daily water intake: 1/2 ounce per pound of body weight if you're not active (that's ten eight-ounce glasses if you weigh 160 pounds), and 2/3 ounce per pound if you're athletic (13 to 14 glasses a day, at the same weight)." hope this helps.
Thanks fot those responses. The problem here is that she thinks that eating a salad with a stamp size piece of chicken, and then at night, eat corn flakes or an aple is healthy food. She wants to go veggie, and if if we go to a restaurant she orders only salad, she is crossing the line, no doubt about it.
If that is typical of her daily diet she may have an eating disorder. Some people with an ED hide behind the label of vegetarian as an excuse to eat very little.
and for g-d's sake, chicken is NOT a vegetable. How much good fats is she getting? It's fine to eat only a salad if a) that's the only option b) she likes salad and they make good ones or c) she's really just going to be sociable with you. Noodles with olive oil and herbs is another option, as are jacket potatoes. Are there any Asian ethnic restaurants that you can go to?
I don't suppose anyone realizes what we just left behind us? Winter. The season of...dry skin and pale faces. x
This winter we lived in a horrible old building with poor ventilation, a bad condensation problem and freezing temperatures, and the skin on my face has suffered so terribly, it flaked and everything, I was devastated! This was clearly the winter for me, as I usually have lovely naturally moisturised skin, and Im vegan. Its improving again now, slowly I think from the OPs comments ("are you all like this?" etc) it looks like you could benefit from reading up about being veggie or talking to real veggies and learning that no, were not all ill, the vast majority of us are healthy, happy individuals, and I for one eat loads and a balanced diet. A vegetarian diet should not be causing any health problems, infact it benefits many people If she genuinely is just eating a few leaves then it could be an eating disorder, but please dont assume that just because she wants to be vegetaian theres something wrong, or shes "blinded". It may be she chooses salads because she doesnt like the other veggie options etc Good on yuo for coming here to ask about her, its obvious youre concerned. I think if you want to give her advie though you should be more informed about it first PS yes please do tell her that chickens arent plants
Dont worry, hehe, it's funny, of course chicken is not, she is eating it only because the doctor told her so, to eat proteins, animal ones. She is crossing the line, I am reading a lot about the heathy vegetarian food, its not my kind of food but I got to be aware of the pros and cons of a veggie diet, I know its healthy and all that, but she is not taking it in a good way, not at all. Of course that I am worried, I love her, that's what i am trying her to realize, that going vegetarian is not eating only salad, you got to eat beans, a lot of different veggies to get you daily suply of energy, in the end, you got to eat. If she choosed to not to eat meat again, well, good, dont eat it, because its a dead animal, it was a living being, what ever reason, I am not the one to point a finger on her, but is like people with eating disorders, the think that they can still wear the pants that they used to wear when they were 15, no, the body changes, it does not mean that you're "fat", no, its just that your whole body is changing, you are not 15 anymore, can you get my point?. I think that when you got the wrong aproach, the result is always bad, I dont know if i am the one who is "wrong", but eating only vegetables (the chicken is optional, only because the doctor tell her so), just because is wrong, you got to have the right aproach to become a vegetarian, to do it in a healthy way. Am I right? This was just a thought, I dont mean to get anyone upset, its just me, a worried guy.
Yeah you gotta have beans and whole grains and nuts. Knocking off junk food will help, especially sugar and salt and additives. They can f you up.
Hans, which medical system is she in (country)? Even in the UK and the States, hotbeds of vegheads, we run into doctors who despite getting their required afternoon of nutrition in their pre-med college, insist that only protein from critters is adequate, despite the many studies that suggest parity (equally good) or even the supremacy of plant protein.
The only reason she sounds like she's not looking healthy is because shes not going about being a veggie the right way. If she doesn't eat meat substitutes, or beans&nuts, or take any vitamins odds are she is going to waste away. Especially if she does a lot of sports, she needs protein. All doctors will tell veggis we need animal protein simply because the majority of them don't agree with the lifestyle, but in this case it sounds like shes not getting ANY protein. Tell her read up on vegetarian protein and when you take her out to dinner make sure there are other options for her on the menu rather then just salad. What were her eating habits like before she started this?
She was Ok, eating not that much but almost everything, sorry for the delay in my response, I was out of town for several weeks. Now only salads, like she says "healthy food", yeah right.. A salad at night, corn flakes at breakfast and a salad for lunch. The other day they mesured her body fat and she is way down, she's got almost the minimum, I dont know what to do and she does not take any more advise from me.
Thats my fear, is might be using this as a excuse to not eat, I dont know how to handle this, everything I say is bad for her, its a shame, she was the best gf I've ever had. She is becoming a maniac in every sence, for example now, she dont want to use the elevator, now, only stairs, she is getting out of control, and of course, for her, she's got everything under control, but its very sad to watch her loose all.
