hello, everyone.I am new in here. Let me introduce myself first. I am an university student who studing graphic design. I have been doing a project which about "Recreating a strategy from 1960s American advertising in contemporary teenagers (Chosen the strategy of re-creating the 1960s hippy culture) I am a big fans of 60s.And very interesting about hippies.I am facing a huge problem with my project... But there is no one can help me, the research from the web site is not enough. As my research, the hippies in 60s like gathering, and making friends by using music. Since an increasing number of Hong Kong teenagers turn to various websites when it comes to making new friends, the face-to-face communication among people is weakened. So I’m going to organize an advertising campaign which encourage communication. And I want to use "drum circle" to help them to express themselves in public but not at home and speak in the cyber world. I have some question want to ask. 1/ Can I hold a hippies event without drugs? (my tutor said,"if there without drugs, how can you call this is "hippies event")Is he right? Is this the real hippies spirit? 2/In 60s, how hippies tell other people that there have a event for hippies?I have making some leaflet and poster...but the tutor said"it is too commercial!Hippies event not a commercial" 3/Can drum circle help the teenagers to undersatnd what is the communicate is? And I use music to make them understand what is the real "Hippies spirit"? In TIMES magazine, I found a line The real hippies’ spirit is “Do the things you want to do, no matter when and where, change others mind. Open your mind, Rely on love, honest and happy.” (From “Times Magazine “ the Hippies theory) Can anyone help me here? Thanks for reading this.
Question #1-Most hippies in the 60's did take some type of drug at least once, because of the spiritual journey it gave them. Although some hippies did not take drugs, drugs still took a huge part in the hippie/psychedelic counterculture. Question #2- A lot of hippies did not support society, advertisements, corporations, etc. So most events such as Woodstock, and the Monterrey Pop Festival, mostly had fliers or rumors going around about the events. Question #3- The real hippie spirit is a wonderful one. Its mostly about having fun, doing what you want to do, being yourself, being free, and to live your life the way you want to live it.
www.welcomehome.org is a good place to look for wants common in hippie attitude. They may be you....?peace from an older hippie to you and yours
well, i don't think drugs are a necessity. it's more about the freedom to do what you want as long as what you do doesn't cause harm. but if you hold an open to the public "hippy" event there will likely be folks who will be smoking pot and doing drugs. the ambience of such an event will draw "hippies" and invoke "hippy" behavior. usual advertisement for "hippy" events come in the form of flyers, colorful psychedelic posters, announcements on appropriate message boards and word of mouth. a good drum circle can become a spiritual experience. when the drummers really get into their zone it's like a meditation that radiates to those around them. drums conjure up ancient genetic memories of tribal unity and a closeness to the environment. a nice bonfire helps to invoke these atavistic memories. wear flowers and feathers in your hair, paint your face, dance, leap, strut, clap your hands, stomp your feet, make joyful wild noises, break the confines of convention and be free and in the moment.
