I bought some to plant about ten years ago. Never got around to it, now I am not sure why I wanted to try them. I don't think they'd do well in my clay soils. Have trouble growing even radishes in it. But with the scare over peanut butter today, I may just give them a whirl this summer. I'll work some sand and a lot of compost into the area and let you know how it turns out.

Sorry I don't have any personal words of wisdom to offer.

    well i potted 8 up today =]

i shelled them, put them in water overnight, and theyve swollen up. potted them up in our own compost (first year of using 100% homemade compost), and then just left them in the greenhouse. i wouldnt be surprised if nothing happens, but if something does, than yay!

clay soil is what we grow them in in georgia and they do fine.
You can look at this as a problem or a blessing........... if you dont get ever peanut up out of the ground they will create new plants next year.
Some people will consider it a weed as they come back and can take over. Others think its a good thing as they self replicate and come back year after year. without having to plant more.

That's good to know Back2theland. I am planning on planting two short rows of them this year. How do you deal with them after harvest? Just dry them? Eventually I'd like to boil some. Saw a thing on tv about boiled peanuts and it seemed tastey.

well ive potted them into a biggish pot, and theyll stay there - we're rapidly running out of room to grow in the garden =/

i think you just let them dry after the harvest..

do you harvest them when the plants died back?

we pull as much of teh whole plant up as possible and lay them out in the field in the sun to dry. Obviously dont do this on a rainy day. Use a pitchfork to break up the ground around the plants to make them easier to pull up then just throw them to the side to lay out. Same as we do our garlic here. Once the sun drys them you can use a dry shed or barn to hang them up and let them dry a bit more.
If you are going to boil them I would just wash them off and boil them. No reason to dry them then.

Mine haven't come up either. But then the seed I was using was ten years old. If I can find any raw peanuts around here I may try again next year. Don't remember why I didn't plant them the year I bought them. But I think I'll feed the rest of the old stuff to my parrot if she'll eat them.

yeah, we put the rest out in a feeder for the birdies.

im not sure where i went wrong =/ maybe because i soaked them overnight before potting? we dug them up and they were all mouldy and rotten...
