I really enjoy reading biographies and now I was wondering if you guys would have any recommendations. I would be forever grateful.
I once read a REALLY awesome one about Buddy Holly. But now I can't for the life of me remember the name of the author.
hi kozmicblue if you're into the 60's and rock music, my favorite biography of all time is about bill graham and it's called "bill graham presents...my life inside rock and out". the best part about it is that most of it is a series of conversations with the musicians of the time who talk about bill and the music of the 60's. you get a real sense of what it was like to be there. i lived a few blocks from the fillmore east and my friend worked there, so i know that it gives a very true portrait of the times. it's written by bill graham and robert greenfield and it was published by doubleday in 1992. deezee
I just finished about a week ago "A Long Strange Trip" the Grateful Dead biography, if you're into the 60's or the dead or both you'd like it
John Lennons biography called 'Lennon- The Definitive Biography' written by Ray Coleman is a great biography
The Autobiography of Angela Davis. It was ghost written by Toni Morrison and gives you a great sense of what was going on with the Black Panthers, and African Americans in general during the 60's. Hey Kosmicblue, I just saw that you are from Helsinki. My family is going to host and exchange student from Riihimaki. She is coming next month!
my favourites are "Syd Barret and the dawn of pink floyd" and "heavier than heaven, the kurt cobain biography"
Thanks everyone! I've already read some of the books mentioned, but the rest of them definitely seem worth reading. I'm definitely gonna check them up next time I visit the bookstore/library. Hi Ceres. Wow, that's awesome! Riihimäki is not far from where I live actually, it's less than an hour by train. Are you excited? I hope you'll have a great time with her!
The same recommondation I made on a different post. John Adams by David McCullough The Education of Henry Adams by Henry Adams. "Education" is a different sort of autobiography. It was written during the last 10 years of his life (he died in 1918, and the book published posthumously --in accordance to his wishes). The events in his life are secondary to what a man learns over a life time. Also written is his belief the power of the Dynamo (electric motor) was replacing people's faith in religion. He expressed a desire to live another 50 years to find out how the new age of science is going to interact with religion.
i just bought Allen Ginsberg's biography by Barry Miles for $4 from a 2nd hand store! V. Good stuff, it's got lots of info on the whole beat gen and a copy of the news article about Burroughs killing his wife!
hhmm... i luved 'lust for life' by irvin stone[vincent van gogh] and i liked to read agony and estacy by irving stone[michelangelo]
ahahaha this thread was written years go under my old user name. And I was just about to reccomend the same book. Still cant remember its title.
Garcia-An American Life is great. The Lives of John Lennon is good if you want to read a really long ,long book about everything in Lennon's life including every shit he took.
If you like political figures, Plain Speaking: An Oral Biography of Harry Truman by Merle Miller is excellent.
I'm reading "Lincoln" by David Herbert Donald at the moment and would highly recommend it. "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow and "John Brown" by W.E.B. DuBois are excellent as well.
I actuallly didn't like The Lives of John Lennon much. It was way too long and seemed to exaggerate things quite a bit. Barry Miles did a biography on Paul McCartney that was really well done. I want to say it's called Many Years From Now, but I'm not positive.
