more than likely just your scalp doesnt like it. i use the knotty boy all purpose shampoo bars and i dont have any problems with it. do u rub the bar on ur head or lather it in ur hands? if u rub it on ur head u might not be getting all the soap out. idk, my head seems to like it just fine.
I have been having problems finding poos too. Then baking soda leaves junk on my scalp (water is icky here) I have been using plain ole Ivory Bar soap lately..and it is great.
I don't use any shampoo. I used to way back in the day but stopped cause I could never rinse it all out. Just water for me now
i chopped up my Ivory soap bar, made some tea, and then threw my soapy chunks into the boiling tea and let the soap melt completely. then poured out the soapy goo into a tuba wear container and made a really nice smelling soap bar. and im sure if u used rosemary tea or something of that sort it would be really beneficial. i forget how much water was in it, but i used 4 bags of tea haha. oh, and the soap bar turns really ugly....like brown turd ugly.
DM... I just suggest trying burts bees shampoo... it was like a whole new world opened up for me.... and every once in a while I get itchy... I just add a drop or two of tea tree oil too.... http://www.burtsbees.ca/webapp/wcs/...&storeId=10201&langId=-12&subCategoryId=22609 I've tried most of them...but the raspberry I can get local... so I like it best
I've been using the Rasta Hemp Shampoo bar for years and I love it. Made right here in the Kootenays. www.mountainskysoap.com
lol... its not residue free... but it leaves my hair cleaner that the dreadhead hq shampoo for sure... and it smells good and 98.12 percent natural... or something like that. And ya, the chapstick is the shiznit... and the coconut foot moisturizer too...
i was gonna say that! i don't like the lip balm, too minty and actually hurts my lips (i have super dry skin) but i freeking LOVE the coco foot cream! i was telling dean that today when i saw it at a store.
Everyone's shampoo experiences are so different - to be expected, considering everyone's hair/scalp is different. Personally, I used the Burt's Bee's s'poo a few times and it did seem to leave a residue that made me feel lie I needed to wash my hair more frequently than I wanted to (because it started smelling kind of like rancid oil). But I have a friend with gorgeous dreads who swears by Burt's Bees s'poo. I've been using Br. Bronner's for the most part, and I really like the way it cleans my dreads, plus seems to rinse out well. I do, however, find my scalp feels itchy after about 4 days. No flakes, still, I wonder if Doc Bronner's can tend to get harsh after several uses in a row & dry out scalp. As for those who don't use any shampoo, how do you keep your hair form getting to smell super "musky"?
Yeah, the greasy (oil) hair is what eventually causes that strong musky smell. In the beginning, when the smell is not too old, it's pleasant and natural. But after days and days, weeks, the smell can get downright putrid. So I'm wondering what those who opt not to use shampoo or soap do about that smell.
Funny I thought I would die at first not being able to wash my hair every day, then I got use to it and was good for every 3 days, now I just wash whenever I feel I need it , like once a week. I don't think I could get use to not using a soap of some kind. I do think its something we are probably programed to. Mandy can probably answer about the stinky dreads. Think she said her hubby is use to the smell. I dunno , I wouldn't want to subject my friends and family to it, and my hubby would prolly cut them in my sleep if I even tried.
The Knotty Boy soap bar may my head itch like a sod after about 6 weeks of use. I've since tried Lush bars and baking soda (not at the same time, obviously ) and wasn't overly chuffed with either. I'm now using a 99.9% pure aloe shampoo (Aloe Pura from Holland and Barrett) and its absolutely f*cking brill. I'm now able to go about 4 days between washes before I want to tear my scalp off, whereas before it was a max of 2. I'd certainly recommend trying it to anyone, but I think shampoo choice is pretty much like everything else to do with dreads: a case of different strokes for different folks. Sometimes it just takes a bit of experimentation til you find what works for you and what doesn't. Happy hunting!
i really honestly dont get a gross smell at all. when i rinse my hair, i get the pretty much same result as using soap. any accumulated oils etc either wash away or get distributed through my locks... i cant tell exactly what happens but i think the scalp massage helps. after two weeks or so, my bangs will look greasy and ill feel like washing, i might have an itch or two and some flakes... but my hair doesnt smell bad. it has a moderate amount of that normal hair smell we all know, thats it... even after two weeks (often three actually). i worry sometimes about it smelling bad, so ill ask my mom or brother (he would tell me if it did lol) or someone to smell it, and they always say it smells fine. the last time my mom told me my hair smelled dirty and to wash it was back when i still used soap actually. i washed with baking soda followed by acv a while back b/c my sweetie swears by it. it got my hair the same cleanness, but a week later my hair felt dirtier than normal and itched quite a bit. soap has the same effect for me. also, when i deep clean my scalp can only go a week or so before its itchy and gross. but i do it anyway to strip the crap out of the middle of my dreads as much as possible and take care of any gunk that might be stuck in the roots and wont wash out with just water. anyway, i think the just water thing helps my scalp regulate itself.
