I enjoy being barefoot, but here in Colorado where the winters get cold, I find socks are nice to wear. When I want to go outside without shoes, I am quickly defeated by freezing cold concrete. A nice pair of wool socks allows me to be semi-barefoot during winter.
Thick cotton socks are nice when it's cold. And I'm not a hardcore barefooter anyway, like outdoors, mostly barefoot indoors. If I wear socks, it's cotton socks almost exclusively.
I don't want *anything*, however thin or supple, under my soles, but I guess that isn't feasible in all climates . I haven't needed 'emergency' footwear against the cold for several winters, but the few times I did need some, I didn't use socks, they're no good outside. Even long before I went barefoot everywhere, I would often be barefoot or sock-footed indoors, and if I were barefoot I'd run out to the mailbox, the garden shed, the bird feeder etc without putting on shoes, but if I were sockfooted I would not. Well, I did a few times but I soon stopped! Socks seem to suck up the moisture and get wet even if the ground outside doesn't even look more than damp, and also all kind of stuff like pine needles, leaves and dirt clings to them to be tracked indoors, far more than to bare soles or shoe soles.
Socks are just another form of shoes, that is, if they are worn by themselves without shoes. But if I had to actually wear shoes, I would never put my feet directly into the filthy insides of shoes without clean socks on as a barrier between my healthy bare feet and the filthy, fungus filled, smelly inside of shoes.
I hate socks. When it's too cold, I rather wear flip-flops on my bare feet to provide some isolation from the freezy surfaces.
I'm not a big fan of socks myself. I love being barefoot - bare soles on bare floors. As an aside, I've often wondered how businesses that discriminate against bare feet would react if that same person walked in only wearing socks on their feet. Just curious - I'm not planning to explore it myself. The same objections apply to sock-feet that apply to bare feet (e.g., what if you step on something sharp?). Oddly enough, I'm guessing most businesses that react against bare feet wouldn't even notice sock-feet. That said, I haven't had too many negative reactions going places barefoot. The few negative encounters I've had, the people were too emotional and irrational for a discussion to make any difference.
Socks are only good when I have to wear my sneakers for gym class or my boots when there's snow. I wouldn't put my feet in shoes without socks on. I wear flip flops whenever I can, so most of the time I don't need socks.
Socks go nicely with some shoes...when they absolutely must be worn! They do provide warmth when it's cold outside, and they protect the feet against the unpleasant aspects of some shoes: rubbing and blistering. However, whenever the shoes come off, so do the socks! I don't like wearing just socks on my feet at all!
