In this same forum (2 years ago lol) I read this:

Psychedelics not only allow one to sometime obtain siddhis or mental powers... but they can provide a glimpse into the one consciousness.

In other place someone told me that is possible get all siddhis and immortality with some herbs in a time of 48 days.

    Thanks in advance.

What's the Hindi word for "fool"?

If you want powers for the sake of powers, you will not see God.

Psychedelics 'can' (if the conditions are right) help take down mental barriers and conditioning and change our perception of ourselves, others and the world, perhaps opening us to our spiritual dimension ... however this usually happens if we are soul searching and looking within. They can also simply mess your head up, screw with your nervous system burning up the synapses and neural pathways, mess with neurotransmitter production and deplete your natural vitality.

It's a gamble. I also agree with xexons sentiments... If it's ego based and all about YOU 'having powers', it just ain't gonna work. It's about the whole and the truth or a deep love for another ... in other words, selflessness.
^^ which that certainly is not.

Try packing the rectal cavity with a mix of rue, lemon verbena and datura - during the 48 days, you must fast and at all costs avoid farting, as this will render the procedure ineffective.

it is possible to obtain siddhis from working with psychedelics. can we agree that siddhis are a natural side effect of authentic spiritual growth? there are authentic spiritual paths that involve the use of psychoactive substances, but obviously there is more to it than just injesting psychedelics.

It probably is possible. And yes, as we progress in meditation and them ind becomes stronger, siddhis do manifest. But every spiritual tradition in India tell us to firmly ignore the siddhis as getting involved with them is a sure fire way of becoming entangled in what is just another trap of the ego-mind to prevent you from transcending (and thereby killing) it.

Sages such as Sri Ramana Maharshi have spoken at length on how siddhis are incompatible with the path of spiritual wisdom and should be ignored mercilessly.

Anyway, it just sounds to me like the person who started this thread is merely looking for ways to justify their drug use. Something made apparent by the fact that they angrily cussed out the first person to challenge them.

Probably. Anyway, I don't think anyone is going to get siddhis just by using psychedelics. In traditional tribal type cultures where they are used, it is in conjunction with much preparation, training, ritual etc.
And obviously anyone who is aiming just to get some special or occult powers is on the wrong track.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Chapter IV, verse 1:

    Verse 1: janma-osadhi-mantra-tapah-samadhi-jah siddayahsamadhi.

"The power of Siddhis can come because of previous Karma and genetics (janma), from herbs (Aushadhis), the use of Mantras, the kindling of the psychic fire (tapas), and/or from Samadhi."

Also translated from some sources as the following, reading the same:

"The attainments are not only the fruits of the Threefold Inner Discipline, but they are congenital in some, and in others they may follow the right and intelligent use of certain medicinal herbs (see) or of certain mantras or they may follow the kindling of the psychic fire."

It would be interesting to know the case history of someone who has attained the siddhis through using either herbs or drugs alone. I know numerous people (myself included) who have used both cannabis and psychedelics yet none of them appears able to levitate for example.

One may under some circumstances get some light from these things, but I've yet to encounter or indeed hear of anyone who got special powers.
A lot of people it seems make very lttle of the experience. They just get wrecked ...... :D

Swami Satyananda Saraswati wrote that Aushadhi was the fastest, most intense and most dangerous of all paths, also stating that this knowledge had been lost over the centuries, perhaps because such a person who can travel this path is very rare. Anyway, just his opinion I guess, but he is a qualified person in my mind.

You can see in the life of Vimalananda as told in the Aghora trilogy that he used a lot of different drugs in his sadhana, though he also did a lot of other types of sadhana including sitting on corpses, sexual practices and so on into more mainstream ones. I would say he was very successful in his spiritual life and certainly had numerous siddhis. That is of course, if you take those books at all seriously. It should also be noted above that he said the best was to chant the name of God. In the Shakta tradition to which Vimalananda could be identified this kind of thing is widely practice, Bamaksepa is a famous example, who drank hard liquor and smoke hashish, and was famous for his use of Siddhi.

You can read in the account of Wang Liping's apprenticeship, Opening the Dragon Gate, that he was given an alchemical elixir as a very important step, for which he had to be well prepared. My own personal thought is that the use of herbs Patajali speaks of is probably similar to the alchemical substances Wang Liping took, prepared in a quite advanced and detailed manner much as the Ayurvedic herbs and minerals are prepared for consumption. Which is not to say anything of the Soma drinkers from which a large part of the Indian philosophies and practices descend.

What I mean to get to is, I believe different substances can be very helpful if taken with an experienced teacher and/or within the tradition each particular substance is used. (Or perhaps if you are very confident and strong in your own path) ie. taking Ayahuasca with a Curandero. In this case, Ayahuasca is the primary catalyst around which everything else is centered. I've not heard about people levitating in such ceremonies, but certainly there are claims of very powerful healing and spiritual discoveries, of which the plant itself is the Queen.

If you go out and drop acid with your friends the chances are your not suddenly going to become (truly) enlightened and start flying around like Milarepa, even if you do believe you can fly for a moment. Just the same, you may experience some genuine mystical states and in the same breath you might experience a tremendous healing, or conversely have a terrifying experience.

To boot. When we meditate, chant or preform ritual 90% of the time we don't become enlightened or experience siddhis, though it is usually a gradual progression and will mostly likely take you somewhere up to 20 years of such practices until you have truly developed spiritually. In contrast, there it's a long verifiable tradition in the West of people using psychedelics in a sincerely and dedicated religious way for similar lengths of time. Which also means there isn't any teachers who can direct somebody in such a path, and if there was they would have to keep quite or risk being arrested and jailed as most the the substances in question are illegal. Indeed there is no path like there is in most meditative (or otherwise) spiritual traditions. Any intense spiritual path without a teacher is very rocky and prone to fail in any case, which does seem to happen to many who do use drugs in this way, which you note. Drawing any parallels in an honest way is hard truly do. Though this may changes as more research is done and if entheogens can continue to be opened up or remain open and the spiritual and health benefits are recognised in our societies.

It may say something in itself that most religious traditions do not use drugs, outside of tribal practices, which is were most of this happens or came out of in our days. For example, that they are truly not beneficial to spiritual goals that therefore have been weeded out and taught against. Although, this maybe more telling of the cultures themselves that gave birth to these more organized religions and perhaps the different psychoactive substances they had access too, and perhaps also the loss of the more traditional medicine people who held this knowledge when we became more 'civilized.' It may also be related to what I stated in the first paragraph, that a person who can be successful in this path is very rare, because it is so intense and dangerous, and therefore, the high majority of teachers themselves warn against it. Like the Dude says, "There are many in's and out's, a lot of things to consider man."

It does seem from the reports that are out there that if you do not use psychedelics on your spiritual path, along the way you will still probably experience many similar things as one does when taking them, and vice versa, though perhaps in a different manner. Either way, if you stick hard and fast to spiritual life you will almost certainly develop some minor or major siddhis weather you want to or not, what you can and should do with these is another whole debate.

Ps. Sorry to babble on so much, but it does help me to figure out how I personally feel about these things, and also give the chance to evolve and change these idea's if I express them. Peace!

I'm not saying there's no value in psychedelic experience. Certainly it can in the case of some people lead to a mystical type state. This is something I have experienced personally. However, my experience shows me that for the vast majority, it doesn't. Probably that's due to karma, or at least to the general orientation of the people concerned.
Tribal cultures, or what remnant is left of them, are holders of a great deal of wisdom, there's no doubt about it. What you have to consider though is the huge difference between the upbringing and education of tribal people and moderns. IMO a lot of people today are simply too crazy to be able to use psychedelics without imbalancing themselves, or as quite a lot do, ending up on cocaine or some other hard drug with zero benefit and a great risk of severe physical damage. I think this is an insane 'culture' which is mass producing feeble people. People's minds have been conditioned with layers and layers of stuff which is completely extraneous to what we actually are as spiritual beings. If some experience comes which shakes things up too much, they have very meagre inner rescources on which to fall back.

Another problem is that in western societies, drugs are generally considered to be part of a hedonistic lifesyle. The idea of ingesting something to go on a spiritual journey is really quite alien to western culture.
My opinion is that there are factors for and against.

In India, no doubt cannabis has been used for a long time, and probably some psycho-active mushroom as well. Many spiritual teachers however, say that it's not the way, and in the case of the vast majority of people they are probably quite right.
Thing is though, there are exceptions to every rule. There's no one 'right' path for everyone, other than in a general way.

Many years ago when I tried lsd, my first thought was 'does eveyone see this stuff on it?' I soon found out that this isn't so. It's definitely the case that it is only some people who will have spiritual experience on it.

However, that experience in my case changed the course of my subsequent life, and over the years I've studied a lot and tried different spiritual practices. I think it's been that way for many people.
For me I suppose looking back, the the down side was a sense of alienation from the surrounding society, but this was back in the days of 'drop out, turn on, tune in', and like many, I had a kind of naive idea that the world was changing for the better. The long term result in one way has been that whilst I'm quite happy on the spiritual level, I am somewhat disempowered as regards worldly stuff like earning money.

Just to end, I'd like to quote Carlos Santana who when asked about lsd said ' it's ok - if you're a good person these things won't harm you'.

    Anyway, that's my ramble.:D

    love & peace.

    Hare Krishna !

Use of psychedelics can only ruin, only a few blessed ones like BBB can come out clean and safe after trying out for some time. No short-cut, there is no short-cut method to give us eternal bliss . And, as aspiring sadhakas, let us not try to do what so many great yogis can do. They can swallow a piece of burning white-hot coal or do so many incredible things, let us not even try to do that. However, siddhis are like mines of copper, silver, gold, diamond, etc .... on the path of our spiritual quest for God. Let us not get lured up by any of these and stop our journey to God-realization.

    Love,

    Kumar.
