It pays to be dramatic sometimes, right? So my girlfriend went for I guess a typical salon rip off last week, alot of money and alot of wax went into her hair...anyways, as we try to move forward, heal and hopefully learn from this experience what can we do to recover from this terrible mistake? as it stands she has a bunch of smaller dreads which are pretty waxy, although we have managed to work alot of the wax out.

I should note that shes a white girl with fairly straight red hair of shoulder length. also, she is going for a neater less "natural" look, and were wondering, wax being apparently a sin, if you can get there without constantly rewaxing.

ps. maximum respect for huge natural dreads but that just isnt what she wants, dig

It's definitely possible to have neat-looking dreads without wax use. If you look through this: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=355001&f=209 you'll find plenty of info on wax removal and all things dready. Do you have/could you post some pics of her hair just to give us a clearer idea of the state it's in at the moment?

well i would suggest using the deep clense wash as much out as you can dont peak out too much mine were started with wax and have turned out fine let them do there own thing the best thing for dreads is time if really worried about having tidy dreads you can use a crochet (spelling?) hook to tidy up loose hairs

I agree with nz. Start with the deep cleanse and then do some research on how to crochet dreads (plenty of how to vids on you tube). Pictures of the dreads would definitely help though! :D

They dont look overly bad. That first one looks pretty waxy is all. After you do the deep cleanse, they'll probably fluff up a lot due to no wax sticking them down, but dont stress. And like it said, if you are going for a neater, maintained look, do some crocheting on the frizz - should help with it.
Let us know how you get on.

Ok, I was envisaging something ten times worse! Yeh they'll be fine :) Just keep 'em clean. Use something like aloe gel to control any frizzies a bit, if they're considered a problem. Salt solution is a great tightener, and apple cider vinegar is a great conditioner (but unless they become worryingly dry, you should probably give it a miss until the dreads are tighter because it softens the hair so very much).

Like others said, her hair looks fine, actually very lovely, just very consistent, uniform dreads (each one exactly like the others). I definitely would NOT comb them out! I beeswaxed my dreads for the first 3 or 4 months until I realised the wax was not helping, but it didn't really hurt, either, and my hair ended up dreading very well.

Dr. Bronner's really worked in, washed, and rinsed very, very well should get the wax out, no prob.

I'd just stop waxing and for the next few weeks or so to get the wax out. Aloe Vera would be a good sub for wax if she wants a neater look. Wax isn't as hard to get out as a lot of people assume it took me 3 weeks to get 5 months of wax useage out so I agree with SisterRags on the bronners thing.
