How you doing? I've been browsing the forum a few months so I thought it was time to register.

I've been planning on getting dreads for a while and finally feel this is the right time, sadly I have nobody to help me. I am currently backpacking Australia and don't know anyone apart from two people, who won't dread my hair.

So my question is, would it be possible to start dreads on your own hair? Using the backcombing method and a few mirrors? I understand I would be difficult but can't find any other way. I've tried salons and they've priced it at a silly amount of money. I haven't really got the time for the neglect route and its not really conveiniant either at this time, cheers.

    Adam.

I did all of mine myself, and in one sitting. It definitely leaves you sore, but I think it's worth it. It makes it even better knowing that this dreadlock process is 100% my own. It was a little difficult doing some of the ones in the back though, but that is also due to a lack of mirrors to go by. And so those ones are a little looser, but they are knotting up on their own just fine.

So I say go for it :p

i backcombed mine by myself :) its not that hard, your arms just get tired when you do the back.
and dont worry about doing them all in one sitting. i stretched mine out over a week or two.

Sure you can dread it yourself. I did. When I work on my dreads, I treat the time as a meditation time.

I know a few people w wicked dreads who backcombed them/twist n ripped them themselves. I think it's a great idea as you know your hair best and what sections feel most comfortable, go for it&welcome^___^x

wait what your backpackinmg across austrailia and u dont got the time to go neglect?
    thats just silly
take your comb out of your pack...and loose it..
now that its lost, continue backpacking, you'll probly have dreads before ya get to see another mirror
most of the dreads i know were born by spending time in the wilderness farfrom mirrors and combs

and yewa thats so easy to do yourself..you can do it wothout thinking, with zero effort..hell u can do it without knowing your doing it

SE - Since having long hair, around 3 years ago? I've never combed it. I don't want to go down the neglect route because I would like to get quicker results than that. I'm sure you will have an answer for this but I an ideal way for you to dread your hair isn't the case with the next person.

Thanks for the replies about helping me, I'm currently in Perth for a few months then heading over the the east coast. I was hoping to get them started before that so it looks like you guys are abit further out the way. I think I'll have ago at them myself and see what happens.
