SO ive had my dread for about 2 months now and i started them the way everyuone on here says not too.. sorry I DIDNT KNOW! so they were back combed and full of wax. when i found this website i took all the rubber bands out and quit using wax and they are starting to get better and i keep tryign to find the legendary wzx removal mixture that everyone seems to mention on here and i can find it in any of the threads. i wash them about once a week. and my girlfriend and i mostly her pull the loose hairs through ( I dont know if thats a good or a bad thing?) also my hair is naturally very straight so i have been rubbing the roots in a clockwise direction to keep it dreading and it seems to work but again i have no clue what im doing. Do i need to mess with them to get them to dread up or not? I dont know anythign really im full of questions and doubt haha but my dreads are lookign alright so far and ive got a tam coming in the mail here are some pics. any comments or opinions are appreciated! well i cant figure out the picture thing im working on it...

I truly don't believe there is a "right" way to dread. I started out with beeswax and my dreads are doing great. Know your hair and do what works for you. Your dreads look fine!

I started mine with beeswax, which i made a hobby of picking out anyway, apart from in the tips, which i left with wax in for quite a long time as it kept them neat, but i have since cut all the wax tips off.

I also clockwise rub my roots as it really seems to help, but the improvements dont last as well through washes, best thing you can do is keep them clean, dont put anymore wax in them and just leave them be, if you really want to you could straighten them, when mine were that new i used to straighten them, firstly to melt some wax out and secondly to neaten them up a bit, but then got bored of getting up so early just to play with my dreads and they'll mature with time bythemselves anyway =]

Check the dready desk at the top of the forum page, and you will find the info on wax removal.

tbh your hair really doesn't look that waxxy, obviously you can tell alot better than i can ^^ and obviously if its really bugging you then try and get it all out, but as i said - i just picked it out and never put anymore in

kudos on trying to get the wax out =]

pulling the loose hairs thru isnt necessary, but it doesnt make a huge difference.. i mean, i dont do it, but i like that. some people crochet, or felt, the hairs back into the locks. if you prefer it, then its all good =]

root rubbing.. i think some people on here have done it, i havent, but ive heard its good

and i dont think you really need to mess with them. if you leave them theyll knot up, if you mess with them you might undo any knots

I wouldn't root rub. There is no reason dreads should be dreaded to the scalp. You have have a inch of undreaded hair or so at the roots. I wouldn't do any maintenance. I love every loose hair on my head and wouldn't dare try to tame them...they are dreadlocks, nappy, matted, tangled, broken, dead hair. It really the opposite of styling or anything...that's the best part you just wash, pull them apart when they grow together, and that is it...no worrying, no hassle, nothing.
