I think insanity is a real concept. Sanity is relative. That does not mean it is meaningless. Someone is 'insane' if they cannot synchronise with you.. if they cannot 'see' the same truths in the world. When someone cannot cooperate with society, they are deemed insane. Ie when they cannot assent to the same basic truths, appeal to reason that makes sense to the rest of society, or act appropriately in public situations.

Insanity can come about, thus, in a variety of ways.

You might be insane because of having totally unorthadox values and ways of thinking. You might, alternatively, be insane because your brain's chemical regulations have broken down. It is my opinion that there actually is chemical insanity, but I also think that a lot of 'insanity' has to do with stubborn ideas and values, whereby the craziness has not got to do with an inABILITY to think reasonably, but a resistaNCE towards it.

Eg. Christianity teaches not to question God and this can lead to what appears as 'craziness' to various observers. The fact that most people believe in things that 'arent there' is used to say that there is no such thing as craziness really, or that it is just a matter of who you are with in determining whether someone is crazy. But I say that there are some people who seem crazy to EVERYONE because the locus of their craziness has to do with an internal idiosyncratic process rather than a cultural brainwashing

I agree with everyone, in different degrees.

IMO "sanity", or "insanity", can be considered in both physiological/chemical and personal/relative context.

Those with chemical imbalances in the brain who cannot control their mental processes and act without deliberation can be considered "insane", in the technical sense in that they "lack sanity".

On the other side of the coin, though, there's the conceptual, perceptual deliberation of "sane" or "insane" which varies from person to person.

Like StonerBill said, there are those individuals who believe in a singular, omnipresent consciousness that forms and regulates the universe as the way we perceive it. God. To many this will sound outright insane.
There's a giant man in the sky that created and controls everything and decides where you go when you die?

This sounds outright insane to some people.

But to those people who DO believe in it, however, there are undeniable reasons for holding to such a belief, and the notion of people who go around in life with no believe in a higher power and no fear of retribution is insane.

Neither are wrong. It's a relative concept.
